Hey guys, Im currently working on my 95 GS that I purchased with a blown head gasket. Little did I know, the head has lots of corrosion on the bottom and would never hold, even with the new gasket.
Im about to purchase a head from a 99 GS but it will not include the cams. Will I be able to use the ones from my 95? They are both 420a motors but I just want to confirm that there was no differences in the design of the head over those years. Thanks!

yeah, same cams, I busted the dowell pin off the exhaust cam in my new motor and I checked it aginst the cam in my old motor, they were within .002 all the way around, the old cam with twice the mileage being smaller

Is milling the head a little an option? My buddy rebuilt the 420a in his Neon and bumped the compression, and it greatly improved the torque across the rev range. I was impressed with the roads that he was driving in the hills without downshifting.

it will raise it slightly, but i doubt it will be very noticable... i think the older neons were pretty light and if it has the 420a, im sure it moves pretty well

not tryin to steal the topic but since u guys r talking about neons... i have a guy with a 420a block out of a neon if i buy it is it the same block as the one in my gs????? i know the heads are ass backwards but i wasnt sure if the block was the same

I'll humor you a bit on this one, since you're making an effort at being respectful. In the future, however, if you're gonna jack a thread to ask about something easily found in the search (just search performance/engine for "Neon" by subject and you'll get plenty of details), at least use the shift key and spell out the words "You" and "Are." That sort of thing just makes us nutso.
You can use the engine out of the first gen Neons with the 2.0L. Both the SOHC and DOHC, although there are some minor differences, it's certainly an easy option for you. Might be cheaper. Hit up the search for more information.
Shaving the head to bump CR is an old trick. One of my original all motor mentors did it and the fastest all motor 2GNT out there right now has done it. (Hasn't he?) I don't think I'd try to go too far with that, although you really don't need to rebuild the bottom end if you're not boosting the thing. Maybe just a freshening up and a balance, imo.

If memory serves me, I believe for every 0.005" off the head, it'll bump CR 0.1. The information's on here, but I don't have the energy to search for it.
