#119248, "Help needed - Engine stalls on initial startup"

Hey guys, 97 RS Stalls when i start it unless I tap the throttle. Even if i just bring it up for half a second to 2k it drops back to 950 and idles fine. I pulled the plugs and they are burnt white. So I gapped them out a little and it runs better but still stalls initially. Not urgent but I'm curious as to what might cause this. Ignition and fuel systems are stock. I have done my normal maintanace: filters, fluids, 02 and Coolant Temp sensors. I also was burning oil but did not see any on the plugs.... Which also puzzles me, being that there was last time i changed them. The starting problem is intermittent.

Are you throwing any engine codes?

Sometimes my car will hiccup like that if its REALLY cold and hasnt been started for a few days, but after I crank it again its fine.

Haven't pulled them yet. The car is at my Fiancee's house for the night. I'll pull them either later on or first thing in the AM.

I'm gonna throw out my old answer here. check your coolant level. I bet you've got a bubble in the cooling system. stalling on startup and running fine after putting your foot in it for a moment sounds like the coolant level has fallen below the the temp sensor and the second you rev it the pump pushes the coolant back up into the housing.

burp your cooling system and look for leaks/cracks around the housing and reservoir, it's probably sucking in air after the engine cools.

no codes, and no stallage today. The coolant idea sounds plausible being I just replaced a busted coolant hose 2 weeks ago. I'll check that out. Thanks guys.

yup, you didn't burp it after topping fluids off. burp it, all should be fine.
