#119110, "RPM DROPS AFTER NEW CLUTCH, DIES WHEN PULLED OUT OF GEAR"

This is what happens. Im cruising down the road in 3rd gear theres a light ahead so i pull into nuetal to stop the rpms drop and car stalls.
It doesnt sputter or jump just a smooth stall. The rpms dont jump up and the car seems fine other wise.
I just put a new clutch in and the speed sensor is bad, could that have anything to do with this? I have no spedo. maybe bad sensor or ecu? any help would be greatly apperciated.
its a 97 talon 420A. only upgrade is a short ram intake

thanks

Well, basically all you need to do is replace your stock coil pack with something aftermarket.Eclipse/Talons are highly known for this problem. I threw an MSD coil pack in my car and it hasn't shutoff on me like it did with the stock one.I have also heard that you can use a coil pack off of a dodge neon. If I were you I would just go with one of the aftermarket ones. =)

Do not replace your coil pack. The individual who told you to buy one apparently does not know 420a cars at all. The speedo sensor being bad is your problem. If you search a little you will se others that have the issue as well.

The ECU keeps the RPM's raised around 1000 when you take load off the motor suddenly liek pushing in the clutch. without the speedo signal the ECU doesnt know the car is moving and the ECU will not react fast enough to support the rpm's and the car will die.

The ecu keeps your rpms above 1000 until it sense the car's at or near a stop (0-2 mph maybe) when you push the clutch i while driving. If the speed sensor is bad, the ecu doesn't know how fast you're going, so doesn't compensate and rpms drop too low for the motor to keep running.

Replace the sensor, problem solved.

Fix, your speedo these guys know their stuff and WTF? go ahead buy a new coilpack either screamin demon,or maybe MSD. I've read about that MSD's end pins snap easly and this guy got fed up and went back to OEM. If you keep stock coilpack use Accel 8mm wire Advance has them for cheap, will be one day wait on them.

You might wanna ask others views about both coilpacks..

ok bigger problems now i guess. i searched as much about speed sensors as i could. i learned there is suposed to be a ring gear at the end of the sensor. i pulled the sensor out of the trans when it was out of the car and didnt see that gear, and it was not hard to pull out. maybe it fell out at some point? should i just get a new sensor and drop it in? will it cause any damage to the trans after all its only plastic? im trying not to be scared, because i dont want to pull the trans out again!

Yes you can miss the little gear on the end of the sensor. The gear itself is plastic and as big as the sensor. Stick your finger inside and see if you can feel it woddling around. It might have just came loose from the sensor and still remains in it original spot in the trans. Mybe if your lucky you can fish it out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

95eclipse.....see previous posts and use the search function. If your going to spread inaccurate info here, you wont get any help from me. the 4G63 motor is the motor with known coil issues. Not the 420a.

its not random at all its when he pushes the clutch in. see my post above for an explanation regarding what the ECU does.

If you have a 5 speed, take your car for a ride around the block. Push in the clutch and coast to the stop sign. Watch what your Rpm's do during your coast. They remian at 1000 or 1100. Then when you stop the Ecu brings them down to the Idle Rpm.

The Neon sensor will read inaccurately. Sorry bud wont work. The gear will work but th sensor itself is not going to help you.

The old gear is going to make a mess in your trans, ask Darkone.

Does it creak only while moving? or maybe when the car is stopped too? might not be a bearing but a bad ball joint about to freeze or a cv joint that's ready to grenade. not completely sure

the other noise now has stopped. i was also thinking balljoints. maybe it was the wheelbearings and maybe the balljoints arnt making noise now because i pulled them out and put them in, i dunno. and yes it was making the noise driving slow and at a stop.
All i need to do now is the valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket!
