#118778, "Thirsty Anyone?"

Hey Everyone,

Today was one hell of a day, we had a flash flood warning, and a possible tornado farther to the west. I was lucky enough to get off work early and was trying to get home befor the storm hit. On the way home I hit a huge puddle of water in the road spraying water on both sides of me and almost causing me to loose control. During the splash fest, my car inhaled a good amount of water threw the intake and my whole car shut off. I stood there for 10 mins trying to dry off the componets with a spare apron from work that was in the back of my car. But it just would not turn over. I tried it one more time gave it some gas and boom she fired up for me.

I reved it a few times saw tons of steam shoot out the exhaust and drove home. Since then I have let the car sit in front of the house turned on for 10-15 mins, revved a few times and everything seems fine now. Now here is the question, could any of my cars componets been damaged like the engine or anything else and should I check anything?

Thanks,
-Cody

Well it sounds like you escaped hydrolocking, but I would still pull the plugs and take a look to see if there's any water in the motor. Search hydrolock for some more info on what can happen, what to do after going through water, etc.

Do search hydrolock issues. O and something you could do before you go all out (even though it sounds like you know the answer to this) is to take off your intake pipe and see how far the wate went up and if it stopped before your throttle body you're okay if not, well, you know. Boy, that was a run on sentence.

Thanks guys, I ran a search and found that one of the best ways to check is to take out the plugs and crank it, but heres the thing. . . How do you crank the motor without the plugs? Do I just take the plugs out and try to start the car?

Thanks,
-Cody

Dang it! I was going to tell you to do that about the plugs! I deleted it last minute because I was afraid of getting flamed for giving you the wrong advice and I didn't want to do that anyway. It's been a while since I've researched hydrolock issues. Anyway, yes just crank the motor with the plugs out. It will spew out any unwelcomed water and without the plugs there's no spark for the engine to fire so you can crank away until you feel it's time to stop. Good luck!

Yup. Just like doing a compression test. The starter is located on the lower front of the engine block. When you turn the key to START, you complete a circuit which routes power directly from the battery to the starter. A pinion gear pops out, engaging the flexplate (not a flywheel on our cars) which is bolted to the crankshaft. The starter motor turns the motor until fuel is ignited on a power stroke, setting the whole thing in motion.

Long answer, but worth knowing.

How do you like the 0.5 extra wheel horsepower you get from a full CAI right now? Think it's worth it? emoji
