#118574, "CEL after some dirt road drifting......"

Ok. So i was bored as hell and decided to do some slides without fucking up my tires.

I did drift up over a 1 ft tall sandy embankment but didn't fuck up my alignment or bumper....nothing like that.

Now, i have a cel. It was fine but a few days ago i did put a rubber cap over the intake manifold bung for the pvc valve. The pvc valve itself is hooked directly to a breather. This is temporary until i can find another hose as mine cracked and broke into smitherines while doing my valve cover gasket (which sealed great btw. Felpro=da shit) The thingy on the right hand front of the block has a vac line that has came loose twice. It's circular and has electrical connections. I should know what it is but i dont.

So, as soon as i noticed my cel, i went to the nearest gas station after getting off the dirtroad. (I have to vaccum sand all out of my car.....just got done washing all the dust off of it and out of the engine bay) The thingy in the right hand front of the block's vaccum line was off. I guess the line was caught on the intake (I have half of the stock intake tube still on the car) so i freed it up. That would be the cause of it comming loose i assume.

I turn the car back on, cel still on.

Now, i fear that i sucked sand into my engine. I do have a cold air intake. I bought a filter from autozone not too long ago and a friend gave me an intake pipe and coupler so i went to town. I assume the filter was pre-oiled since it didn't come with oil. It's a cotton/mesh woven filter, not the all mesh one. I never bottomed the car out or caused any physical outside-force shock to the engine.

Now, wtf could be the issue here?

Car drove home just fine. No jumping rpms. No high idle or anything of the sort.

I'm hoping it's just because i have my pvc valve hooked up to a breather instead of to the intake manifold. If that was the case, wouldn't it have come on the 4 days i've been driving the car like that? The front end of the car was on a level surface at all times. I'm really thinking i sucked sand into the motor *bashes head against wall* since i did kick the clutch to pull the ass of the car back straight.

Atleast i can say it was fun doing manji/fishtails back to back for a quarter mile until i tried to see how sideways i could get and my ass end slid in loose dirt on the side of the dirt road and hit that sand bank. Who says fwd can't drift? Holy shit that was fun! I dont have power steering, which is good because i can't over correct. I'm better off using cheap tires and going to the tarmac. I hope somebody gets a good laugh out of this and feel free to help out when your sides stop hurting.

If you'll excuse me, i've got to vaccum my car out..... That's ok. My interior needed it anyway.

Goodnight sweetheart...yes its time to go...bum bum bum bum bum...good night sweetheart yes I am one little a$$hole......bum bum bum bum....

If the car is running fine, you probably didn't suck sand into the engine. Get some hose and hook the PCV valve back up to the intake manifold and maybe even replace the vacuum line on the EGR valve (the one you say keeps popping off). And stop "drifing" in the sand.

Best advice I can give you is to do your eclipse a favor and sell it to someone who will treat it with respect. Sheesh, fuckin' kids these days.

I always thought it stood for check engine light....

I need to get a scan tool. Srsly. I wish i could remember where i saw one and how much it was. I know it wasn't THAT expensive.

Hahaha.

EGR indeed. fucksake. Yeah, i'm going to replace the pvc lines. Like i said, the stock one cracked all to shit when i i was trying to remove it from the vc. When it broke free, my hand hit the intake manifold pretty hard...... I'm working on fixing it.

Yeah, i'll stop ass dragging in the sand. Boredom. I wanted to do something. Everyone else had previous engagements, some went to charlotte to race.... I dont street race. I like getting sideways and smoking the rubber off my tires but at the same time, tires are expensive. That's why i was on that dirt road. Not like the car is lowered or on performance spec tires. Plenty of grip for the dirt. I know you can drift a fwd through weight transfer, accel off, accel off/feint, and a little touch of the ebrake. Why it doesn't count, i dont know. You can do it in a rwd car the same exact way. Only thing is, you cant steer with the throttle. It's so much easier to go a little hot into a turn, downshift/kick the clutch and power over using the throttle to hold the slide. Plenty of angle (depending on car) without even touching the ebrake.

I was planning on getting an s13, doing a jdm 180sx body conversion w/kouki spoiler, high offset 18's, d-spec tokicos, and then eventually swapping in an rb20det motor. You know, just what a pure 180sx should be. A deal fell through with this asshole in Florence, SC who was supposed to sell me 2 240s (one had a bad motor knock but the body was in good shape, the other had a good motor but needed full glass and a paint job) for $1000. I had the cash in hand and motherfucker ok'd the transaction. Next thing i know, he's not returned my phonecalls for a week and then out of the blue, it's off autotrader. Lame. I was bummed. I was so psyched on the deal i could build a hot d-spec 240 and have another 240 as a stock trim dd.

.....one day. Maybe i can come across a deal in the future that wont fall through and have said car.

I just went out to get a pack of smokes and as i was comming down the hill right before i got to my house, the cel flashed erratically and then as soon as i tapped the brake to pull in, it stopped flashing and stayed on. Something is up with the egr i guess. I'll get some block off plates and ditch the fucker. Dunno about you guys but i dont like oil and crank case vapors getting sucked into my cylinders anyway. I'll check the connection on the back of the intake tomorrow. Mosquitos were tearing my ass up as i was cleaning all the sand out of my car. Never again. This is a sign my car wasn't meant to slide. Hades-omega can have that shit.

Thanks for the badgering and the help.

When you do a keydance your CEL light will flash telling you the codes. I'm not sure what you mean by erratically but I've set off the keydance before just on accident.

It blinked a few times. Not a whole bunch.... It was like the bulb was messed up or something. I'll be right back. I'll go for a drive and see if it does it again.

BTW, i paid this much for my 2gnt. I was searching for a car for my mom (see 3800 series II thread in the pits section) and found this just now.

Ok. I just went for a 30 minute drive.

I did early upshifting, engine braking, redline shifting and just cruising in the top 3 gears at 2500ish rpm.

Now, sometimes, the car felt kinda like it was choking. A quick put-put type hesitation but when i accelerate, no problem at all. I'm guessing it's because i let the rpms get at or a little below 2k and was steady cruising. I also felt a slight knock but it felt as though it was comming from the wheels, not the engine but it was random and happened a couple times. It wasn't hard or anything but it was enough to notice.

Just flat out mashing through gears, nothing. Cel blinks these random codes but the car doesn't feel weird or anything.

Here are the blinks i got. I let them cycle repeatedly so i was getting it mostly accurate. Assume i miscounted the higher ones. I'm tired now. Haven't slept in almost 24 hours.

the first few were a:

3
4
5
6
8

After i started driving for a bit I got:

9
10
11
16
17

Before i even started off on my little random drive, i cut the car on-off-on-off-on and did this twice. No dancing. Nothing. Light just stayed on.

Now, a 1/2 mile down the road, the blinking started. The time between blinks is consistent.

What the fuck?

Seriously. I'm about to shit. It's my fault probably but damn. This doesn't make any sense to me.

Edit: I swear to god, i'm never driving my car like a retard again. If i get really bored, i'll pop in a porno and rub one out. Fucksake.

Well to start off do you mind telling us how you got those codes? None of those codes (except for the double digit ones) are even real CEL codes. Did you read the directions for how to do a proper keydance?

The consistent blinking you spoke of is what you want to count for a keydance.

OR... he is getting a misfire and thinking that those blinking lights are the codes.

Can't do the keydance on his year car.

A flashing CEL means you have an active misfire in one of your cylinders. That is not a good thing. Have you replaced the stuff I told you to yet? A breather filter on the end of your PCV valve is not great for it, you want the vacuum to pull out those vapors in your crankcase. Take it to your local auto parts store and get the codes pulled for free with their scan tool. What kind of maintenance have you done to your car yet?

Misfire. Makes sense.

I wish i had known you can't keydance my car. I was thinking i might have skipped a timing belt tooth...... Car sounds the same though minus a bit of puttering here and there. I went out driving today. Mom needed a few things at the store. Pulling from first felt like i was driving a minivan. I checked the egr before i left and everything was hooked up.

What i.d. hose do i need to reconnect the vc bung to the valve and what i.d. hose do i need to connect the valve to the manifold?

Also, what i.d. size hose do i need to connect my valve cover to my intake pipe?

I'm going to change my sparkplugs out since i have those new in the box.

As far as tune up stuff goes, in the past three months i've had the car, i've:

Bled the clutch, removed the restrictior and re-bled with brand new dot 3 fluid. Clutch feels good now.

I changed the oil with valvoline synthetic 5w/30 in the red bottle. I used a purolator filter. Did this right after i changed my valve cover gasket.

My head gasket, headstuds, sparkplugs and timing belt came in the mail last week as well. I bought the head gasket thinking i might need it since i did find a bit of what looks like oil in the coolant system.....which i'm going to flush shortly. Haven't done my timing belt yet. I'm waiting on my neighboor to cop me a 3 jaw puller from the garage so i can get the damper pulley off. As soon as my check comes in from selling more of my stock (i'm not big time, i just invest a little here and there like an emergency savings account....), i'll finish most of everything.

My suspension is getting a full overhaul/upgrade with energy suspension/tokico and i'm re building my ps/ac belt/pulley system whenever my mom sells her buick.

I pay for my mom to live with me.

If the case was normal, i'd still have to pay to fix my own car in which case i'd buy every tool i need and probably have my own garage. Still, bad things happened and i'm looking after my family now.

No mech is touching my car besides having alignment done after i fully work over my suspension. I do have a buddy of mine that builds high hp race cars, quads and bikes and he's helping me with my machine work and car audio. When we pull the engine, carpet and all that, the chassis is being stitch-welded by us. Other than that, it's all me.

BTW, those spark plugs i pulled were beat. I'll change the wires with mopar/oem units next week. They were drowned in oil and i spent a long time cleaning them up. They work, for now.

Problem solved. No more check engine light.

Spark plugs were fucked.

Insulator melted a bit on one of them.

I put in the new ngk v-power plugs i got and my car is faster than it was when i got it. Sweet.

However, while i had the plugs out, i should have done a compression test. Oops. Beer+heat=get priority one finished first and then move on. I still haven't piggybacked my 6 disk changer to my cd player yet. I have an mtx amp, 6 subs, an eclipse 4 channel amp (needs repair) and a few other little audio doodads that still haven't been put in..... Maintenence comes first.

Thanks for the help.

Naw really. Those plugs were done. The ceramic insulation on one (i wish i paid attention to which cylinder it came out of better) was partially melted. Looks like there's alot of carbon in that cylinder too. What kind of fuel additive is good for blowing some of this shit out?

I'm getting ready to purchase another 420a, neon tranny, 2gnt tranny soon to work on. I just keep calling nearby yards often to see what i can find.

Yeah, i beat the shit out of my car. It's old and the old crap gives way first. I treat subs the same way. I had two kenwoods i put in today. One subs' coil sounded like it was about to go so i pushed them as hard as the amp could. It's not doing shit now. I blew the voice coil so hard the leads melted off. Either the mtx amp is underrated or those subs were on their last leg. Time to put the 12"s in and beat on them.

That's how you find the weak links in anything. Beat the shit out of it. Test limits, find them and make them better. I did find out the rear suspension in our cars is pretty stiff. The front end rolls pretty hard though. I think i have the perfect "action plan" for the suspension.

So yeah, i break stuff. I'm an abusive person but eventually i find something that can take it. Bmx anyone?
