why would you want to retard ignition, and how does this prevent detonation?

I don't have my books on me, so I'll wing it. Retarding ignition timing means that you fire off the spark plug slightly later in the cycle. This means that the piston is in a slightly different position when the spark goes off. This can reduce peak combustion pressures and temperatures. High temperatures and pressures can promote detonation.
