#118149, "im new here... need u to tell my dad how it works..."

Hey, my name is Danny and im new here on 2gnt. I dont have my eclipse yet but im recently looking at one that needs an engine and transmission. The eclipse is a 96 rs for 500 dollars and as i said before it needs an engine and a transmission... luckily my friend and i have recently purchased a 97 eagle talon esi for parts that was wrecked by some chic! Now to my question, my dad dosent think that the talon engine is a bolt in installation and he also thinks that it wont run right with the new engine installed, i believe that it will and i need u to tell him that it will also! The only thing that might need changing is the ecu if i am correct? Sorry this post was so long and thanks for your help!

You're correct as long as they're the same motors. Just look at them, it's not hard to tell. Of course if the car that needs new motor/trans needs it b/c there isn't one in it, then just tell him the two cars are the same and that there are only minor differences, the engine not being one of them. Tell him base model eclipse, rs, and gs (not the spyder), are equivalent to esi talon. Eclipse GST and GSX are equivalent to talon tsi and tsi awd respectively. There was no talon vert so you know it's either the 420a that comes in the base, rs and gs eclipse or the 4g63 which came in the gst and gsx eclipse.

PS, welcome to the site, stick around and learn some stuff (teach your dad too) emoji

Edit:

420a found in the non turbo cars...

4g63 found in the turbo cars...

Even ignoring the motor, you can see clear differences in where stuff is in the engine bay, i.e. ecu, motor mounts, radiator style and radiator hose, battery, etc.

Also tell him that the Talon esi's and dodge avengers (ones with the 420a) are nearly the exact same car, just with different bodies.

**Edit** Aren't there emissions differences/ecu differences going with a '97 motor to a '96 harness?

You should be okay. There are minimal differences in the wire harness between 96-97. If all else fails, you get the sensors from a 96, install them in the 97 block and your 96 harness will bolt right up without issue.

As an added bonus, the entire factory service manual is hosted on az2gnt.net for your convenience.

Wasn't 97 the first year they started with the inverted cam sensor?

I just had my 95 rebuilt. Put a 97 block in it and I just kept the 95 sensors and hooked them up to the 97 block.

no cam sensors were inverted on the eclipse, just an update in the electrical plug.
