#115716, "belt shrieking problem, LOUD"

OK, car had belt squeal before when it was wet outside, but no squeal other than that. It was coming from the belt that runs the power steering pulley/crankshaft/tensioin/ac compressory pulley.

Last week it got a lot worse all of a sudden. It was a LOUD shrieking sound, you could hear it from a mile away. I took it to a garage and they supposedly replaced a pulley, not sure which one, and it went back to the occasional squeal when wet. Now it is shrieking LOUD again.

Belt is relatively new (had all new belts when a newer engine was put in about a year ago)

Any ideas? Sounds like something is rubbing, maybe a different pulley?

Thanks...

So tighten the belt.

Yea, I would definately try tightening the belt. They always stretch a little from when they are new.

Also, what brand is the belt? I had a couple Dayco belts that would just not stop screaching. After I went thru a few of them, I ended up buying a Gatorback belt and have had no problems since.

Gatorbacks are good, if they squeal you know there's something wrong

Do you know how to tighten it at the tensioner? A 14mm will fix it.

I found out that my belt was squealing when it was wet outside due to the fact that my oil leak was coating my belt with a thin mist of oil. So I sprayed engine degreaser on the belt and no more squeal.
