I just installed a built 420a in my car a week or so ago. It has about 320 miles on it right now and there are a few things I have questions about. Background info. The motor was completely rebuilt, everything was replaced with new stuff. Installed Je pistons, eagle rods, clevit bearings, had the crank turned, new valves along with valve stem seals, also installed a jeep 60mm TB.
Here are the problems
1) The car idles perfect at around 850rpms. But when the car is rolling in neutral it idles around 1800 and sometimes surges from 1400 to 1800. The car has always idles around 1200 when rolling and then comes down at a complete stop, but this is a little excessive. Everything must be sealing fine for it to idle right but why does it idle so high when its rolling?
2) At idle the EGT are around 1050F I changed and gapped the plugs a few days ago and it still does it. The WB says AF is around 14.7 at idle so I dont know what the problem is. I am running 440s with the SFMU at 12psi at idle.
3) I installed a topline oil pump with the new motor. The oil pressure has always seemed lower than with the stock oil pump. When fully warm I am getting about 14psi at idle. Cruising is about 40-50psi depending on rpms. I searched on this a little and came up that the spring in the pump determines the oil pressure. Could I just change that out with a new stock spring to increase oil pressure?
4) I get a little bit of smoke when starting the car in the morning. It only smokes a little till it warms up some and wont do it unless it has been sitting for a good while. Is this typical with forged internals?
Sorry for all the questions but any input would be appreciated. And all of these questions have been search for answers also. Thanks guys.

That's fairly normal. The ECU always increases the idle when the car is rolling.

You're fine. Don't worry about it. Your EGT only comes into play under boost and high load. High EGT is a sign of the ECU pulling timing, and the ECU pulling timing is a sign of knock.

Yes, or you could shim the spring that's in there already with a couple of washers. it may get higher or lower depending on how the motor wears in, and what kind of oil you're using. I don't have any experience with this, however.

No. Is it white, blue/grey, black, steam? Could be condensation, or it could be oil smoke from imprioperly installed valve stem seals or something. Give me more info.

Thanks for the reply.
The idle surge is just annoying as hell. Im going to mess around with that when I get some time and maybe test the IAC to make sure its still good. Will the Jeep IAC sensor work with the 2gnt ECU? I haven't heard whether it would or not.
At idle the ECU should be pulling any timing. Maybe phantom knock or something? Also my probe is bad I believe, it will randomly drop down to 400F or something but when it works it seems to be accurate but no telling really. That will be changed in the next few weeks. I will also be buying megasquirt in the next week so that may help also.
I will have to try shimming the spring a little I guess. That low of oil pressure scares me, and its only going to get worse when I reinstall the oil cooler. Ill let everyone know how if that helps or not.
Im not real sure on the smoke. It looks white just like condensation but its like 80-90F outside and it will still do it when its cold. So I wouldn't think its condensation but it could be. It only smokes when completely cold so I wouldn't think its the valve seals, if they were leaking after the car sits for a few minutes it should smoke again at start up right?
When I changed the oil the first time there appeared to be water or gas in the oil also. It wasn't much but something was in there. I have been watching the oil closely and the level hasn't risen any so if something is still leaking its not bad. I was just going to finishing breaking in the motor before I try to solve that problem as its not bad at the moment.

Put your hand in it. Is it wet? Does it smell like coolant? Does it smell like gas?

Ok I tried to feel the exhaust when I started the car earlier. My hand never got wet and it just smelled like exhaust. I will try it in the morning when it smokes more. I also fixed the idle surging. I changed the IAC sensor with the other one I had and it works perfect now. About 1200 when rolling and 850 idle.
Also I have 8.6.1 pistons and the rings were gapped- Top - .022, Mid - .020, oil - .022. I am getting about 16-17 in.hg at idle. The stock motor had right at 19 in.hg. With lower compression pistons will that lower the vac. at idle?
Damn there was something else to..... I will add it later. Thanks for all the input guys.
