I boughr a ELM327 USB Scan Tool to see why my check engine light is on. However when i connect it to the port underneath the car however I always get this error from the computer. "CAN Error make sure vehicle is obd 2 compliant and ignition is on" what gives?? I have a check engine light and Cant see what it is???

the 95-99 is not a CAN unit. you prolly have the wrong code reader.

I What Kind of reader do i need I though It was OBD II and it said when i bought compatible with my model car?

Also by the way my Scanner is an ELM327 USB Scan Tool CAN Bus OBD2 OBD-II Interface that I bought off from Ebay..

According to the product description its for 96 and newer obd II CAN Bus equiped cars. You dont have an OBDII CAN Bus car.

Works with all 1996 and newer cars & trucks that are OBD II, CAN-BUS compliant

Go to autozone and buy the basic code reader for an OBD II vehicle. They will sell you the right reader.

The ELM327 should work just fine. It supports a variety of protocols, including CAN, PWM, VPW and ISO; your car operates with ISO. I don't know what software you're using to try to connect to the interface, but there's probably a setting somewhere for you to specify the protocol.

So is it the scanner or the software Im confused?
Well I have the ScanTool.net for Windows v1.13. Is there any different software to use with this. I really want to see this check engine problem

If your car is 95-97, just do the keydance. You don't even need a code reader.
