Last night I was working on my launches on a back street when something weird happened. I was shifting into second when my shifter just came all the way back...way past what it was before. So I slowed down and took it to my friends house. I took off the center console side panels and found out what was wrong. On the shift cable, that metal thing that the round silver piece sits in is bent out so the silver piece doesn't stay in there anymore. We tried to clamp it together, but it looks like a new piece will need to be bought. Should I take my car to Mitsubishi, or can I do this myself if I got the piece of a salvaged car? Thanks.

try the salvaged car route first...if you do go to satan, at least get the part from somewhere else...or better yet, get the part somewhere else, and get someone else to install it, if you can't do it yourself.

You're talking about the shifter cable eyes that the shifter ends sit in, right? That are cotter pinned into place?

Not sure if I know what you are talking about. It is just below the radio under the center console, its a metal plate that has a hole in it that narrows at the top. A metal circular piece with a groove sits in there and stops the shift lever from moving to far back in 2nd 4th and reverse.

if the thing just slipped off teh metal linkage cables, u can just slip it back on and use jb weld to hold it in place. dont get any on the cables tho, that would be really bad.

Well, my mom took my car to local shop to see what the problem was. Apparently there is a horse shoe type clip that fits in there and holds the pieces together so its fixed now. Thanks for all your help though.
