#114078, "Car shuts off at random times"

Hey everyone,
i have a 1995 Talon ESi with 179,000 miles on it.
it has a wierd problem, there's no pattern to it that i can figure out.
it will try to stall out at random times. the CEL flashes when it tries to, if i catch it, i can give it gas and it will stay running.
any ideas?
i've already cleaned the TB and changed the gasket.
Thanks in advance.

IAC? When was your last full tune up (plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc)?

I have the same problem and it seems to be a typical problem that lots of people have. No idea how to solve it though. I changed my IAC, MAP, spark plugs, spark plug wires, etc.... Just about everything I could think would cause it. On my local forum there are people with 7 bolts, and even evos that have the same problem. If anyone has any idea, please help.

My '95, FCC-controlled 420A had the same problem. I could be accelerating, decelerating, cruising, on the highway, local roads, etc. -- it would just shut off at the most seemingly random times. I couldn't tell you what the CEL did (someone removed it before I bought the car and I haven't bothered to re-install it), but the battery light did turn on when it shut off. Most of the time I was able to restart the car without stopping by just letting out the clutch.

Anyway, it turned out to be the ECU. I found an original '95 MTX ECU for $30 and the problem hasn't returned since. Apparently my old one was remanufactured; that's what the sticker on the case said anyway.

Take your positive and negative battery terminals off and clean them really good. Then put them on really tight. This has happened on two of my 2g's.

Don't forget the possibility that the wire harness running along the EGR pipe next to the head may have made contact, melted through the insulation, and be causing intermittent shorting of the power/signal lines from critical sensors, tripping the ASD relay.

I've had this happen a couple times. The symptoms are typically similar, although predominately occurring during cornering, when lateral g-loading forces the harness up against the pipe or head (ground).

I had this happen last spring, same symptoms. I changed coil packs, wires, ASD relay, and pretty much everything else ignition related. I also had the flashing CEL (which indicates active misfire). Only code that was thrown was misfire in cyl. 3.

It actually ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. I replaced that and was good to go. No more random shut-offs.

Hope this helps.

I agree, crank sensor FTW! My car did the same thing, took mitsu 3 times of me dropping it off to figure it out. Mine went out with only 20k on the car, it was only 1 1/2 years old.

Project 2.4/Big ass turbo now underway....

Somewhat old thread but Im having the same problems. Its very annoying, and Ive already replaced sensors including the crank sensor.
Im going to my buddies house to get the 2 ASD relays, and if it doesnt fix it Im just gonna have to find a new ECU.

It also would be good to look for burnt wires and shorts coming from the sensors to the ecu. Checking wire resistance would always be the second thing to do if all your sensors check out in ohmage. You should see very little resistance like 1 ohm or less from point to point. Would Be something to think about before going to satan!!

My 2gnt did that, and it was the ECU that went dead.
