All I can tell you is that it's such a bitch that unless you really, really need your heater, just bypass the core and call it a day.

It's a bitch, but it can be done in an afternoon with a friend. I can have the dash out of my car in an hour. Putting it back in takes two people and about an hour and a half.
The heater core would probably be another 2 hours on top of that. Maybe 3.

As a Infiniti Tech, I can say when replacing my heater core, it wasn't bad took me about 2 hours alone. Taking a FX35 dash is by far worst and I have pictures to prove this. I recommend getting your hands on cordless Screwdriver and cordless impact (1/4 or 3/8) to get the Job done quick. Good luck

There was a write up on 2gnt somewhere on how to do this, even had pics back in the day. Unfortunately it's on my favorites list on a computer far far away.
Good luck. I hear it's as fun as the first time you do the timing belt change.
