#114005, "RWD Discussion (No, not AWD....for once)"

Alright, everybody is discussing the AWD conversion, but it seems way too complicated, and very expensive. Now what about RWD? First off, would the 420A even fit in there longitudally (sp?)? If not, then I guess I'm screwed from the start. Secondly, what transmissions could I use? Does mopar make anything that would work? i would rather try and use something out of a junkyard and could get for relatively cheap. What would I need in the way of differentials and all that good stuff? I don't plan on doing this anythime soon, but I am interested. Please post any other comments/suggestions/ideas/pics. Let's keep this thread going, i think it may get very interesting.

You would run into many of the same issues that you would with AWD, as the only RWD transmission that would bolt up would be the one from the base liberty. The entire front subframe would need to be modified, as the transmission, like most from RWDs, has the shifter as part of the transmission. The crossmember that goes against the firewall would need to be hacked to oblivion, and the steering rack would be in the way, to say the least. The issue is that the transmission would need to sit actually under the car, and go down the driveshaft tunnel a bit. AWD would actually be easier. I have a couple of pics, somewhere, of when I sat my motor longitudinally in my engine bay, before I bolted it in. It sorta fit, but it was really tight. I am not sure that any crossmember with any structural integrity would be able to accomidate a transmission passing under it. As for a rear diff, the only one that would bolt up would be one from a GSX, but I would not try to put much power through it in RWD form, as it is taking all of the abuse from the power of the motor, whereas on a FWD, it is only taking on 50%-60% of the power.
Kinda sad, but AWD would be easier.

Damn, that sucks. Thats a little dissappointing, but it's not like I was about to go try it. Oh well. RWD has some advantages...I wanted it because of less drivetrain loss, and because I would still be able to dyno it for free. There probably arent any AWD dynos up here in NE ohio. But hey, if I ever go AWD, i can do some sweet launches...even in the rain.

find a back axle from a car that you know can handle the abuse, it might not fit perfectly, but the rear wheels being (maybe) a little outward might look a little cool. (i was thinking of doing the same thing to my old buick skylark, but using a 350 and a rwd trans)

That's about the only part that Ford ever built well emoji Their rear ends handle good power suually.

Check with the Avenger guys, they have built rear wheel drive... even with a V-8 under the hood.

it would be way too much money/work cuz you'll have to put a RWD tranny in thre which is very different from ours. The AWD tranny at least mounts up like a FFs.

if you want a RWD 2GNT you might as well get a 240SX cuz that's basically what it is a RWD eclipse specs are nearly identical just RWD. of course the S14s are a little bigger.

Yeah, buschur is using a ford diff. He also tore out the subframe and hacked in a Ford subframe to work. One of the advantages of going with RWD would be the handling aspects of it. Going to a solid axle and RWD would solve the understeer problem, but would open a whole different can of worms. To go RWD, we would need a donor rear diff that would bolt in place, and be designed to work with an independent suspension.
I still stand by the fact that AWD would be easier.

Lets get serious...most will probably think im joking but im not... you want a rear wheel drive car.... why not just chop the poop out of back end and mount engine in the back hatch....Im pretty sure theres enough room...IT would take a lot of welding and fabrication... but It would probably be a little easier then mounting our engine in front sideways...then running drivetrain under car... I mean the hookup with engine in hatch would be a lot like engine in a front wheel drive car I would imagine...think about it...

Funny that you should say that... I always thought that would be neat. There are a few issues, though, and most of them involve airflow. Namely, there isn't any. Intercoolers are the bain of the MR-2's existance, and the radiator is still in the front. Getting air into the engine usually involves some kind of a straw that pokes out of the engine bay and faces forward above the B pillar. It would not be an easy procedure, and you would need a firewall back there, too.

Whatever you do, calculte the cost first. Then take that money and go buy an MR2 turbo, and keep both cars! Way too much money IMO.

Well the wy I see it, saying "go buy an mr2" is like the 4g63 guys saying "buy a gs-t" when we want turbo. some people like to have a one of a kind car, that is different.

My bad dude, I was really trying to be serious though. I couldn't imagine the troubles ahead with all the fabrication. I would just rather have 2 dependable cars, that's all.

I know for a fact that the whole town would shit if they saw an Eclispse flying sideways around a sharp corner with the back tires lit up!!

yeah, lol, i don't think it woud be worth all the fabrication either. but it would be nice. i would rather go with AWD, since it would be easier, orkeep FWD, get LSD, and maybe some slicks for the strip. much more realistic.

I swear.. you guys need to get your heads outta the greddy and nopi catalogs.. and just do it..

remove the axles in the front.. cut axle cups and put them in the bearings for axle stubs (you need the axle.. it holds the bearing/hub together)

Then crank open the 5sp tranny.. weld the diff.

Remove the drivers axle seal.. put in a frost plug..

Cut the passenger axle cup.. weld the output shaft for a talon AWD transfer case to the output stub.. jam the axle stub into the tranny.. grab some steel stock.. weld up a beefy bracket for the talon transfer case.. flip it over.. (make sure the output seal isnt leaking)

put the transfer case in.. run a driveshaft back to the rear end..

bolt in a GSX cross member and gas tank..

you might have to flip the rear end as i'm not sure which way the output shaft spins on the talon tranny..

and volia.. RWD..

Now.. really.. was it THAT hard?

If you have an automatic.. you got it a bit easier as there is an A604 transfer case which i belive is 1:1 which with the right bell housing modifications, will bolt up right to the passenger side axle output..

Now.. the real question.. who's gonna do it?

Are you being serious Dave? Do you think that all the power going to one side of the diff and only the GSX rear end will be ok? I'm talking like 300WHP.

(it's sounds like I'm being a smartass but I'm serious. I really don't know much about tranny and rear ends but the idea at least sounds feasable emoji )

Don't usually, come in here, but hey this sounds interesting.

First off, Dodge "Formula" cars are rwd and have sequential transmissions, and guess what, are powered by SOHC Neon Engines... Might be worth looking into that...

Next issue, when you go to this level of "custom work" it doesn't really matter any more if you use chrysler parts or not emoji

One more snag is that if money is a big issue, then it's probably going to be difficult.. but no entirely impossible. After all you can go buy a POS 80's dodge/chrysler RWD car and use parts from that... If you do your own manufacturing (welding/cutting etc..) then...

Many RWD transmissions can be made to fit on "other" cars by means of adaptor plates, which use pretty much a similar concept to wheel spacers... i.e. piece of metal goes in between bolts to tranny on one side, engine on the other...

Apart from space considerations, you do realize that in many RWD cars, your elbow is be literally resting in the transmission (or at least the transmission tunnel)...

Here are a few transmissions I just thought of (some thrown in just for example sake)...

- Conquest/Starion were RWD right? Gosh I'm starting to forget!

- Sylvia/240SX/200SX/180SX setups... Look outside US for Manual transmissions if all you find are automatics..

- One from a Lexus IS 300/200 (IS200 available outside US has a 6spd manual) or any RWD toyota...

- Viper 6spd Tranny from Mopar.. about $2K (new..!), probably quite big though...

- Holinger ( http://www.holinger.com.au/ ) Arguably one of the best 6spd sequential transmissions in the world. Price emoji About $10K.. which may seem a lot, but considering people run 8s on these in Skylines... is actually a good indication...

Dave, only problem that I see with that idea is final gearing.

The output would be geared with a final drive from the transmission (3.94, or maybe 3.55 if you swapped out SOHC Neon stuff). The transfer case is 1:1, but the rear diff of a GSX has gearing of it's own. The car would be gear limited to under 60MPH. Any suggestions on fixing this?

that sounds like it would be pretty nice, and not too hard. so i guess the questions would be: 1) how much power could this handle, and 2) What about the gearing?

I don't think that it would be all that strong, in all honesty. The 4 bolts aren't even completely indestructable, and the transfer case couldn't really be trusted for a whole lot of power. Keep in mind that these componants are designed to take half of the torque of a 2.0. Might work for most people, but I think that a turbo'd 2.4 would rip that all apart, if it catches traction. I see axles breaking, T-cases busting up, and differentials shattering spider gears, in that order. The 47MPH gear limit is a little suboptimal, too...

47mph for a trailor queen is all u need right bill i think ill order one emoji

making something like a mustang rear end work wouldn't be a bad idea or a supra/240sx rear end dont know much information about them but its worth a thought...

Bill

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.
If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.

The rear diff isn't the issue. The problem is getting power to it. The idea of using the NVG-T350 is that the final gearing is way to low, 12.XX:1. With a transmission with 1:1 gearing, or a rear diff with 1:1 gearing, this would work. Otherwise... well, no go.

mitsubishi/dodge starion rear drive 2.5 turbo, also some 84-86 toyota celicas had indipendant rear suspension, but the i think the rear engine idea is the best, think about it, all our petals and the shifter are operated bye linkage, it would be more or less a matter or lengthaning that linkage, mr2s are basicly front wheel drive motors and trannys just mounted in the back, mount the intercooler in the back, take out the center tail light and put a scoop on the top of the trunk, but still, thats some crazey enginering, if you want rwd that bad just get a carbureted 350 and a 9inch ford rear end.

If the Starion Rear diff isn't 1:1, or close to it, it wouldn't work. Period. We already have a diff that works in back. Gearing is the issue.

I'm not going to read all these posts so I'm just going to reply. This post is just simply talking about the rearend, it in no way explains or elaborates on the tranny that one might use, because I don't want to get a headach trying to figure that one out!

Any way you look at it you can't use a transfer case to make our cars RWD. You need a stout rearend! Why, well for one the a transfer case isn't designed to take that kind of abuse. You can't launch is hard because it will be taking all of the power and it's simply to weak to do it. You need a strong rearend.

Which is the really fun part. We have an independant rear suspension, not a solid rear axle which sucks for us if we want to race in the 1/4. Talk to vette owners they will tell you! So now we have to look for a rearend that we can bolt up to the car. Our car is GM thank god therefore we may be able to scavanage even some old vette rearends. It would take some customization to make it fit, but I'm sure if you want RWD you can do it. Just a simple thought, and with is goes a custom drive axle, some sort of tranny that I haven't found yet, and a bunch of other stuff. It can happen though, but in all honesty, AWD is SOOOOO much easier!

Oh yeah, and you'll have to turn the engine 90* to make it line up for a tranny!

WTF are you talking about? A GM? no that's a cavalier or sunfire, The eclipse/talon is a Mitsu/Chrysler. Maybe you should have read all the posts, this was mentioned about the old RWD dodges.

EASIER?!?!?!?! Your looking at more work to make our cars AWD then RWD. Either are going to take a lot of work but if thats what you want and have a few grand to spend go for it.
