HAs any one ever put any tohught into a air shifter on what it would take and if it is fessable. U would need some kinda of ignition cut and of cousre all the air components it is very easy to do to bikes but how about a street car. It would help out a ton never need to get outta the gas and just push a button. I am going to check into it with a buddy of mine that races bikes. ( I really don't know if that topic belongs here)

Any ideas from anyone.

I think I know what your talking about....but the reason it works for bikes so easily is because there shifter only goes up and down...where ours have to go side to side as well. to make it work you would have to have two cylinders that actuate at togeter and precisely at that right time., probably in the engine bay were there is more room. It would be tough IMO and probably have to involve some serious elecltronics. If you do it have it do the clutching for you too:thumbsup I think a set up like that would be sick...kinda like the new grand prix's...and long as you could make it shift OEM style too.

this doesn't sound THAT hard to do. it actually sounds pretty cool. the shifter linkages go forward and back, not side to side. if one had 2 pnumatic actuators with electronic stops i think it would work pretty well.

here's a quick doodle/brainstorm that i made in mspaint here at work using a touchpad. the quality is crap but you get the idea.

I think it would be a lot harder then you think...because think about it.

Lets say you start in 1st (duh). To get to second you have to stroke cylinder "A" "X" distance. And to get from 2nd to 3rd you have to retract cylinder "A" 1/2 "X" (thus make cylinder "A" a 3 position cylinder)then fire cylinder "B" "Y" distance and then retract "A" the remaining "X". 3rd to 4th is the same motion as 1st to 2nd. And 4th to 5th is the same 2nd to 3rd, but cylinder "B" is already partially stroked out so now "B" has to be a 3 position cylinder as well. OK...now that we have that worked out...how do we get into neutral...and reverse? Probably 2 separate "buttons/programs" for those. And if I were to do this I would have the system clutch for me as well, to eliminate all human error. That has to be done a spilt second before the other actions can take place, and released a split second after. These are all very complex movements that require some degree of accuracy...at least it is in my world of machine design.

I should bring this topic up next time I have lunch with my controls guy. I'm sure he would find it interesting and could program it but it would probably require a big ugly box sitting in the trunk...LOL

It's an interesting ponder but not worth it IMO from a performance stand point. And lets face it...do you think car manufactures would still be messing typical, heavy, inefficient, automatics if this was a viable idea? Don’t get me wrong…it sounds like a really cool idea…I like it, but to make it reliable would cost your right arm and left leg, but you wouldn’t need them anymore any way…LOL

I don't know what the big deal is, I can shift up without using my clutch now as it is.

It would help out termendously. U won't be able to go though gears if ur pushing 350 horse. With air shifter i cuts out alot of human error. Prostock cars use to run air shifters pro mods still run airshifters. A manul is faster then a auto but is more inconsistant then a auto. And u can lose power when u shift and even more when boosting.

i always thought that auto's shifted faster. at least one with the proper mods or one intended for performance. the BMW's have different shift programs that will adjust how much time it takes to switch gears. i think one program is like 3ms. whips your neck around.

the reason bikes can do this mod so easily is because they have sequential gear boxes. the shifter only goes in 2 directions, up or down. race bikes have dog boxes and can be opperated clutchless.

now for street cars.
if you really want to you can convert your box to a sequential box. but. . $$$$$ and probably only useful for drag racing or circut racing.
you can add a dog box to this which remove the syncros and can be opperated clutchless.
once you have this get a set of pneumatics from Magneti Marelli
these come with the electronics needed.

again be prepared to shell out some $$$$, these guys supply the Ferrari F1 teams, so its the best out there but you pay for it.

wow....good find...interesting concept...but I bet it will still be expensive...insted of 15k it'll cost 7 or 8 to retrofit your gear box and for the controls and everything...still realitively cheaper but probably still expensive for my taste.

i mean seriously. who would do that? spend 7-9 grand on a damn xmission. your car could be so much faster if you put that in mods. imo, this is another one of those over inflated ideas. very cool, but not likely.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.

7 grand isn't that bad really. If u think about it you can have 700 horse but if u have the same old trans mission and shifting manualy then u will never get 700 to the ground or be able to shift it easly. (700 horse was just a ballpark outta the sky number) and you gotta figure anyone that is going to get a trans like this they are getting close to being outta mods or are very serious about racing. Not street racing but drag or auto cross exc exc you no what i mean.

Fact of the matter is no one here is making 700 Horsepower here let alone 600. I don't know a whole lot about all this. But this is all a dream. And I'm thinking even if you were puttin that kind of power down and did mod the tranny with this sequential shifter would it even still be worth it to do it to a 5-speed? Dump the $8k-$16k into making that kind of power, then we will come back to this post. Now lets see that post on making a twin-turbo real wheel drive 420A

Wow, that is a weird looking gizmo. I looked at the pictures for a few minutes and I still can't figure out how it works or where it bolts to shifter cables.

That doesn't go on the linkages, as the Liberty uses a longitudinal trans, so that could go anywhere.
