#112075, "adjustable cam gears"
Nov-14-08 02:28 PM by FreikDog

Ok to make a long story short I replaced all timing components after my timing belt was a little loose due to the tension going bad I think. I have older posts out there about the problems I had after the work. Also, I did drain my radiator due to replacing those obx hoses. Currently, after burping the cooling system twice the engine is idling way better although when im driving getting up in the rpms it runs great. So, today I drove it, and it runs great, but still idles a little wierd causing vibration through the car. So, I got to thinking about it, and I just looked at my adjustable cam gears and noticed that the intake gear is reading A or advance I guess 10 degrees while my exhaust gear is reading R or retard 10 degrees. When I timed the engine I did it right because I took off the valve cover and zeroed out the cams, but didnt notice that the cam gears were set to these settings. So, to make this long story short should I redo my timing taking the cam gears off and zeroing them out to get rid of this wierd idle? Also, I will try to post pics, and my vac gauge reads about 15 or 16 after I come to a stop at a stop sign then slowly goes up to about 18 or 19. Thanks for any input.

As it is now, you may as well, set the gears to 0 and see what happens. It won't hurt it anymore than it is now. If you set timing with those gears like that, it is very likely that your timing is wrong. BUT they may have been 0 when you timed it and the bolts came loose.

Also, a little tidbit of info here, if you throw it on a dyno to adjust them, you can pick up a few whp off the stockers.

But also make sure you arent gonna be so far off that you take out some valves emoji

Well, when I originally installed these cam gears they were at 0. However they did loosen up so when I did the timing again not thinking I moved them forward or backward all the way and tightened them. The car idled fine somehow I had the timing perfect. But after a night of hard boosting when the belt loosened up, and I replaced the tensioner I forgot that the gears were not zeroed. So, I got the timing wrong, and when I was cranking the engine I did notice that it was very hard at one point so hopefully I didnt screw up a valve. I noticed when I retimed that the intake cam I would have to move a little to get the belt to fit right on the cam gears, so Im thinking about moving just the intake gear to see if the idle improves. But, I know that all together I should just redo the timing completely. My mistake should of taken more time, and I would have noticed it in the first place. Thanks for the help, and I will repost with my final result IM PRAYING NO VALVE DAMAGE. Its wierd though because the engine seems to idle fine most of the time, and its runs like a champ when driving??????????? Sorry so damn long guyz.

just keep checking the aluminum wears fast so before too long u could be replacing valves anyways. the t-belt wears down the teeth on the gear causing your engine to jump time.... i just learned the hard way

I think he is a mechanic... Maybe I have it mixed up, and I hope so, but he was talking in chat about a Honda swap into a 1g Eclipse.

Im not the only one who got this impression either emoji

I was under this impression as well...
OP, I had the same thing when my timing was off. Any RPM's over 3k and it ran great. But idle was rough.

Thanks everyone who replied. I have played with the exhaust cam because when I was timing this cam was the I thought might have moved. So, I retarded the cam two degrees, and its definetly idling alot better. I am still going to redo the timing to get those damn adjustables back to being at zero like they should, but for now the car is boosting great, and idling great. Thanks.
