#111785, "96 gs with 95 ecu running very very very bad"

hello everyone. as title said i have an 96 gs which had a bad motor and bad auto tranny. so i rebuild the motor and changed it to 5 speed. here is the problem i had an 95 ecu with the harness so i put it in the car i also changed the fuel rail to the one from the 96 since it does not have an return line. so now the car is running supper rich bad idle and it seem to only be running on 3 cylinder. changed the injector in that number one cylinder today and same problem. also the idle is jumping from 1000 to 1500 to 2000 then it would drop to 600 and do the whole thing over again.

so i just brought an 98 ecu with the harness i will be putting in tomorrow i would like to know since the sensors i have in the car are from the 95 engine will i need to change any of them and has anyone had this problem with their car.

There is no telling which of the myriad of problems a complete engine harness swap could cause would be causing this.

Easiest place to start would be to check the codes the car is throwing, and start from there. if you did any cutting and splicing of the harness, triple check that you've done it correctly and have a good connection.

Why you didn't simply install the same year-model MTX ecu is beyond me.

i see your point but at the time i only had an 95 ecu and harness so thats what i used. and the harness was never cut. also i have been getting the codes but thats only for the egr system until yesterday. so now i have an code for timing belt skipping a tooth. so once again i guess i will be doing the timing. but when ever i pull the plugs they are suppwer rich. do you think the fact it is so rich would have something to do with the different fuel rail, as in the 96 has no return line while the 95 which is the year of the ecu does

Plugs could be fouling simply because the timing is far enough off that there is insufficient compression to fully ignite the mixture. I would suggest spending another three hours hating life re-doing the timing to be sure it's dead-nuts right; no half tooth off nonsense.

Get the timing right and let us know. As for the ECUs, they changed pretty much every year; 96, 97, 98, 99. See the wiki: ECU_Pinout for details of changes.

No, because the '96 regulator is in the back of the car near the tank. The ECU has no way to measure fuel pressure, and doesn't care what the regulator is doing. As long as the stock 96 regulator is still in the car, the fuel pressure should be fine. otherwise, you're probably seeing 100+psi fuel pressures. Can't hurt to verify it, though.

I would bet that the harness you have is damaged or incorrectly installed, or the ECU you've installed is damaged. The sensor form factors are the same between '95 and '96, and sensor output is the same on all 95-99 2GNTs (aside from various emissions updates), so as long as everything is connected properly, it should work as designed (in theory).

Given the car is running, albeit poorly, and you have a CEL for timing belt off +/- tooth, it's probably safe to say your cam position sensor (CMP) and crank position sensor (CKP) are connected properly. If those signals are absent or otherwise awry, it's a no-start condition, so I'd be especially curious about IAT, MAP, and CLT connections next.

When I first got my 97 the IAT was shot and it ran rich enough to choke you.

im in nyc and the weather in not that good at the moment so i am hoping that between now and saturday the shop will be slow enough for me to do the timing their and also install the new harness and ecu but i have one question what would make the timing skip a tooth . when i did it last week everything was on point, and the belt was tight. could this mean that my tensioner might be going bad??? or the ecu/engine was just trying to compansate for the many problems the car is having.

one again thanks for the input

Wow. ECU reports timing is off and you went ahead and replaced the wire harness and ECU before resetting timing? Sounds a bit off-track if you ask me.

The hydraulic tensioners can wear out over time. I've had this happen to me before. You set timing, the car starts beautifully, you drive it home, but the next time you start it, it sounds like a hog. Then it won't start anymore. Checking the belt reveals you're a couple teeth off. WTF.

If you confirm the timing is still dead nuts right, THAT'S when you consider replacing sensors or the like. If you've done all this and the timing belt is still off, there's a good chance you've just introduced a shitton of gremlins to your project.

Never, EVER, start dicking with the electrical system on a modern car unless you've 100% isolated it as the cause of the problem. I've bought parts cars because people have started dicking with the harness and couldn't get the car to run afterwards.

Good luck, man.

the reason i changed the harness was because i knew for a fact that since the car was obd2 and the harness that was i their was obd 1 it needed to be changed anyway inorder for the car to car to past inspection. i changed it first is because we all know that doing that timing is a pain and right now its snowing so i just wanted to get some work done. i dont drive the car at this point. it is parked at the shop till i get a chance to put all the new sensors in and do the timing belt.

but i do understand what you mean about messing with the harness thats why i made sure this one was never cut or touched. i have changed almost every harness on this car because the owner before really knew what he was doing when it came to his wiring. by the time im done with this car it better run right.

I would be interested to see a writeup or how-to on a full ECU and harness swap.

if your changing the wiring from 95 then yeah some sensors will have to be changed. i ran into this problem with my rebuild.

if you just swap long blocks you don't need to swap the harness as well. just make sure you use the sensors that match the harness that's in the car
