I removed the EGR from the side of the block. I also removed all the vaccume lines and the EGR sylnoid, also the egr tube that runs to the intake manifold.

Can I use a fine thread bolt with some jb weld on the threads screwed in the hole in the engine and the throttle body to plug the holes? Any clearence issues to be concerned with?

Also, purerage, do you know if this will always give me a check engine light or not?

Hey whassup,

I have done this mod for my new engine, and what we did was cut out two pieces of metal (one for each hole that we were going to block) and drill holes for the bolts. Before putting the bits of metal on the engine, I put some sealer on the bits of metal.
The sealer I used was a MOPAR sealer used for putting the bedplate on the bottom end of the engine block. Basically it seals metal to metal, but doesn't glue it..

I have a question for you though....

Of course I have a permanent "check engine" light (aka CEL) on now, and the code is for the EGR.

One solution we thought of was to plug the solenoid back into the it's plug and just let it sit there doing nothing....

Another solution is to figure out the "load" placed by the EGR solenoid (i.e. resistance) and replace that with the appropriate resistor.

If anyone has successfully pulled anything like this off, or managed to kill the CEL permanenty, please tell me how you did it.

Do you know if this mod would get detected if i have my car smog??

Well, I am sure it would negatively effect emmisions tests if removed, there's just too much clutter in my engine bay and I'll never pass emmisions anyway without a cat, so it's gotta go.

Thanks for the post RS-Guy, thats what I was going to do, just get some scrap metal and make a piece to screw in just like the factory setup was, but I had doubts about leakage that way, so I think I am gonna try just a big fine thread bolt with jb weld, i'll let you all know how it comes out.

As far as the CEL, I dunno either, I have always had a CEL on anyways since I have owned the car, but I dont have a datalogger to check what the codes are, every other car I have owned has always had like a built in light that blinks in certain repititions for different codes, or some other way to tell without having to invest in yet another electronic that gets used a few times and collects dust the rest... But I guess it wouldnt be a bad investment, huh? Too bad the Accel DFI cant read engine codes and alert you of what is going on. All cars should be ran with a fully editable ecu with a nice GUI, many help/tips sections, self-tests and checks, etc....

After I get my engine put back together, I'll take my car to the shop and use their datalogger to fix the error codes its getting and then I'll plug the EGR sylnoid back in and see if it gets rid of it....

I have the EGR block off plates ready to iunstall when I do a ported and polished intake manifold.

I doubt plugging the solenoid back in will work... but try it.

Depending on what emissions you have to take the EGR doesn't really effect them. I think CA is the only one that tests for whatever the EGR really lowers...

And you have a 98 so you can do the key dance. on-off-on-off-on and count the blink. the codes are on the main page...

As far as leakage I think your best bet is metal plates with RTV on the matting surfaces.

Would there be any way to simply redirect the line coming from the exhaust man. then tap the line say in the header or down pipe. By drilling a hole then welding the tube in that area somehow? This way the CEL won't appear. But I'm no expert, just a thought I had.

Juan made a post many moons ago, stating that many of the Neon enthusiasts who had blocked or removed thier EGR were able to defeat the CEL by use of a 1.2 Ohm, 100 watt resistor added in-line to the egr harness.

Depends on the reason for the code. If you are getting the code for emissions reasons then it doesn't effect the way the car drives at all.
