#111153, "Using neon cams in a 2gnt"

So after about 30 hours of working and running around to get parts and tools I finally got my motor in last night. Finished it up around 11 pm. So i go to fire it up, prime the fuel system and give it a crank. No go. fuck. So after checking the timing, spark, and sensors i was lost. I IM'ed Matt95tgs and he really helped me out. I checked my compression and it was about 180 all the way acrost. VT Kicks ass!!! The rings haven't even seated and I have 180!!! so I pull the intake tube off and crank it again. A massive amount of gas/air vapor comes pouring out. I figure the cam angle sensor is in upside down so i take it apart only to find it only goes in 1 way, heh. I though it was fireing the injectors at the wrong time, like when the valves were closed. Well it ends up that EXACTLY what its doing. Matt figured out that crane sent me the neon cams. This pisses me off, now im going to have to fool with the timing while the motor is in the car. good thing i left the timing belt cover off. So Matt said the neon cams are 180 digrees off. So could I turn each cam sproket 180 digrees and put the timing belt back on? I hope it dosen't take me a month to get the correct cams. man I am so bummed out. But thanks Matt and everyone else that helped me!!! If you guys have any ideas let me know. How hard is it to replace the cams with the motor in. The timing is the only thing I am worried about. When i set it before the motor was out so it was really easy. emoji

adjust the cams 180 degrees go through the normal procedure of putting the belt on and setting the timing, put the belt on and she should fire in the right order, private message Xtreme96gs, the machine shop didnt set his timing right either and he had cam gears he had to adjust 180 degrees, put hte belt back on and it started right up with a rumble, so maybe you have the same probably your timing is off, his car would just crank and try to start but not start if this is what your car is doing then try adjusting your timing and going from there

Whoa, wait a minute. You can't even use neon cams in a 2gNT. Think about it. First off it's not like the cam specs are identical or reversed. If there was a way to get them to work you would be using a neon exhaust profile cam as your intake cam and vice versa for the exhaust cam. No way no how. Also, the firing order on the 420a 2.0L is the same regardless of neon or 2gNT. It's the 2.4L that's off 180* at the crank.

Just bite the bullet, rip out the cams, send them back to crane and get the right ones for your car.

yeeeah. this sucks. I didn't realize they were switched. piss. I should have double checked the part number. If this is anyones fault its mine. I just hope crane dosen't give me any shit about returning them since they were already installed.

When i go to install them is thier any way to do it without setting the timing again. I really don't want to pull the crank pully. What if I align the timing marks and then remove the belt, replace the cams and then pop the cam sprokets on, replace the belt and retorque the tentioner? Am I going to have to unmount the motor and jack it up? I did leave the timing belt cover off...

It's not your fault. They have a lot of blame for sending you the wrong parts. But when you get them out of the car double check to make sure they are for the neon. Then call them up and tell them they sent you the wrong cams.

Honestly, just reset the timing when you put them back in. You don't know what little things could change that puts timing off a little. Its such an important thing that it's just better to know. Setting timing with the motor on a stand or in the car isn't much different ... you just have a fender in the way. You will most likely have to remove the front MM bolt and the side MM completely to do this. It does require the use of a jack to get the side MM bracket off (does for me anyway. If this is you first time doing in on the car it's quite frustrating till you figure out exactly how to get that off. But I would say that is the hardest part ... not setting the timing (though most important), taking off the crank pulley, installing the cams, etc. Just take your time and don't get too frustrated with it.

Just be patient young grasshopper.

If you set timing out of the car you'll be fine, just take your time and do it right. Good luck, and godspeed

Hey, that sounds like me a few months ago!

The correct cams will eventualy arrive, you'll just have to wait.

I guess you could use Neon cams in our cars, you'd just have to install them "upside down" and modify the cam angle magnet so it can be mounted upside down as well. More trouble than it's worth. I'd just wait for the correct ones to arrive (that's what I did).

It looks like Crane makes this mistake every now and then.

they will physically fit but do you realise that you will have an exhaust cam for your intake and an intake for your exhaust ?
they don't share the same lobe profile, lift, duration and excentricity
the engine should run but it would be very restricted in his breathing and rpm range

For Crane's #14 turbo cams this is true. Crane's other camshafts have the same lift and duration for exhaust and intake. (For example, the Crane #10s have a 200 degree duration for the intake and exhaust.)

Sorry, I didn't see at first he was talking about the #14s.
