#110659, "Engine Rebuild"

Well I just got my eclipse, and i'm wanting to rebuild the motor or find a different motor to rebuild and put in it. I was just curious the 420a is said to be a "Dodge Neon" motor right? Well I have a 1998 dodge neon DOHC Sport that has a small tick and i was just curious if i pulled it, and rebuilt it would it by chance fit into the eclipse?

No, head is backwards. You can only use the bottom end.

Ya the head is backwards. But you could rebuild the bottom end on your neon and use your head from your eclipse. The ticking is most likely in the head anyway. I would just put some new valve seals in the eclipse head before you put it onto the neon bottom end. (if you're trying to keep it cheap) That's what i would do anyway.

sounds like a good start. thanks. ill definately look into it. ha ive never actually drove or even rode in a boosted car but they way people describe it make it sound amazing. I am set on boosting but wanna do it the right way. ha and another question, everytime you rebuild you bore the cylinder walls at little bit each time right or insert sleeves? how much is required for each time you rebuild it? I know that people go what .20 over for forged pistons? what if the engine is already at .20 how exactly would that work?

I've never heard of using sleeves on these motors. But if the motor is already .020 over then you'll need .040 over pistons and I think they make .040 over pistons. what they will do is bore the cylinders over another .020 but they will need your pistons for measurements.Once you hit 0.040 over I dont think you can go any farther with our blocks. Correct me if im wrong.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I have never driven a boosted car but I rode in a GSX 4 years ago the guy was selling it but wouldnt let me drive it lol. It had a ton of boost all built it was amazing. The pull is insane.

I have seen a .60 over but very rarely. Seeing it so rarely and on websites that are just plain stupid leads me to believe that they just dont know what the hell they are talking about. As far as rebuilding goes, if it is still stock bore, people generally just hone the cylinders and go with an oversized oil ring (if it is needed) It all depends on how well the engine wore. If it is worn alot, oversized rings are needed. That is the cheap way if you just want a stock engine. To find out the exact wear, use a Mic. (Micrometer) and measure the bore on the cylinder and compare to the stock bore specs. If you have a harbor freight tools around, that place is great. You can get all the tools you need measure engine components for under 60 bucks or so. That includes the cylinder hone, Mic, Piston Ring compressor (makes installing rings a blessing rather than a nightmare). There is a kit at harbor freight that has a multi-pack with Mic and other things that will save you 20+ bucks over buying everything seperate. Just ask someone there, they will point you in right direction. Just dont ask the newbie that is struggling to find where to stock things on the shelves. Also, try carquest for plasti-gauge to measure rod and main bearings so you can see if you need standard size bearings. Full gasket kit for bottom end and head i strongly recommend. better to replace it when motor is out that have to pull it back out after you put it in. Remember to replace front and rear main seals also. That will cover alot of what you need to do. emoji

ah ill have to check that out. closest harbor freight = salt lake city. There is a carquest down the street thoguh. but anyway yea i do plan on building my engine with forged internals and what not, im just asking because this engine has already been rebuilt, i am just not sure to what specs =/ which makes ordering parts a bit hard.

If that is the case, then just pull the block apart (organizing everything in bags) measure the cylinder bore in millimeters. If it is more than 87.5mm, say like 87.52, then it is bored .020 over. If it is less than that and is 87.5, just buy the pistons .020 over. all sizes at most places are the same price. Also if you take the block to machine shop already disassembled, you're going to save some bucks. As far as no harbor freight, just go ebay then. Probably same price on ebay if not a little cheaper after shipping. Just remember, if you can do it yourself the right way, then do it. Search past posts and if nothing, ask. You'll save alot of pain and money. emoji
