Ok so I have done some searching on this topic and havent quite found what I was looking for so I am just going to ask it. My speedometer and that whole thing doesn't work for some reason. While I was driving it just stopped working so I threw a code and the speed sensor needed to be changed. I did that and replaced the gear that it slips into as well in the transmission. Still didn't work so I just randomly moved some wires around and my odometer sort of works like I drive 30 miles and it only records like 4 but the speedometer doesn't work yet. So I am left guessing which wire i should be messing with. So can someone tell me what wires i should be looking at when I mess with all of that. I thought I knew which one but not sure how it connects cause I can bearly see up there. thanks for the help

do you ever have problems with the car dying when you come to a stop? if not your cluster may be borked. see if you can get your hands on a known good cluster and swap them out to test if thats your problem

My car does die occasionally, but i just thought that was a whole nother problem. I don't think it is the cluster is seeing that everything else is working fine on it like the fuel gauge and the temp gauge but i could be wrong. Where were you going with this dying car thing.. you probably have my solution.

when the car dies coming to a stop it's because it's not getting a proper signal from the speed sensor, don't worry about your cluster. Check the thing Dino mentioned, that's gonna be your issue.

I'll paypal you $10 if it's not the speed sensor ring gear on the diff falling off.
Pull the sensor and speed sensor pinion. Stick your finger in there and see if the plastic ring gear is loose. if it is, that's your problem.

so when i pull that sensor again tonight with the pinon and stick my finger down there how am I going to tell if it is lose or not? Better question is if it is lose how do i fix it? Just letting you know for clarification but i did have to replace the pinon already. So is it suppose to attach to the pinon?

it is attached to the differential, and turns the pinion. it is supposed to be secure on the diff, however, if you can move it around with your finger more than a millimeter or two, it's not secured to the diff any longer.
You have to remove and open the trans and replace the speedo ring gear if it has fallen off. if you simply pop it back in place, it will fall off again.

Had a friend with this promblem and what happened was his speedometer ring popped off and shredded to pieces. Pull the diff casing from the bellhousing and on the differential there should be a plastic ring on the pass side. If its loose, replace it. Just make sure you push down and twist it on, otherwise the thing will fly to pieces again. Easy way to check to see if its still there is to pull the speedo sensor out and look in the hole with a flashlight. The ring is yellow so its pretty hard to miss.
