what are you running for cams? generally Crower recomends Ti on their stage 2 and higher. also depends on what you are looking at for top end RPM's

No reason to worry about float with Ti retainers unless you get them and do something 'tarded like re-use some old stock springs. Go with a solid set of Crower springs and Ti retainers. They are super nice.
A complete set of Ti retainers can weigh little more than (1) OEM retainer by itself. This super light weight translates into a more precise valvetrain - the valve springs need only lift the weight of the valve back into place. They're stronger to boot. Win-win.
Are they a necessity? Not for most people, but if you're one of the few die hards out there in this for the long haul, and you want to be sure you extract the absolute most from your heavily modified race head, then there is no reason to skimp here.

Titanium is actually less likely to float due to the reduced weight. more weight=more inertia, which means that the more an object weighs the more energy that's required to change it's direction. valves float because the springs aren't strong enough to provide the energy to keep the walve stem flush to the cam and they end up staying open.
lighter valvetrain = less likely to float
