#108755, "2.4l Crank dilemma"

Ive read many threads on the 2.4l swap and yet could not find the answer to my question. Rather than remove the balance shafts on the stock crank of a 2.4L, couldn't I just use a srt4 crank? I was hoping i could build the motor with srt4 internals and the "top end" kit from Modern performance and then piece together a turbo kit. Not looking to make insane power, just enough to keep it fun commuting to school.

You cannot use an srt-4 crank or any crank made from 2003 on. They use a different style crank sensor that is not compatible with our computers.

Stick with a block from 95-02. You have to remove the balance shafts because you need to modify the oil pan to fit.

I may pick up a '97 stratus donor car my friend is selling but it has around 160k on it. Could you recommend an average mileage amount that would be choice for the swap?

less is better as usual, but you will pay a premimum for it.
when looking for mine i tried to look for them under 75k but most that i found now a days are between 90K to 150K.

however remember that its not just the year but the condition of the bottom end.
either way i would definatlly look into droping it off at a machinists shop to thuroghly inspect it and then machine everything so that you have the cleanist possible base to work from.

????

balancing shaft and crank have no relation
so where's the dilemma ?

with balancing shaft you downpipe will crape the floor everywhere

and you haven't read much about the swap if you think a srt-4 crank would be helpfull in anyway

The problem is that i just flaunted my uber-BANME!ness, haha. Thanks for clearing that up. After reading the balance shaft removal write up from Josiah (http://www.angelfire.com/va3/97_420a/swap/removal.html)I had the misconception that because the balance shaft reduces horsepower potential and inhibits high revs that it was part of the crank emoji .
