So, my questions are about installation of JE Pro-seal rings. I was gonna start to file them tonight, and I wasn't confident to start without verifying a few things. First of all, the ring with the shiney rounded edge goes on top right? On the spec sheet, it said that it should say JE-1 on the top compression ring, and JE-2 on the second compression ring. The ring with the shiney rounded edge (which I believe goes on top) has no markings, and according to the spec sheet, it doesn't matter which side faces up. The other compression ring is all black with a sharp edge and a dot on one side (dot goes up, that I know) Am I correct that the shiney rounded one goes on top?

Second question: According to my calculations, my top compression ring will end up with an end gap of 0.017, and the second compression ring will end up at 0.019. Does this sound right? All the spec sheet says for the oil rail support rings is a min. of 0.015, but when I measured them, they are at 0.030 right out of the box. Is that normal? Will that cause excessive oil consumption?

This is my first rebuild, and I want to make sure I get everything right. Please, if you have built a bottom end, give me your 2 cents, even if it is just an opinion. Thanks in advance, Mike.

I suppose I should mention that the pistons are JE 8.8:1 and I plan on running +/- 15 psi w/portfueler.

The top and second ring gaps seem small to me. I usually go into the 20's. How are you measuring the gap?

I measured them with feeler gauges. According to the spec sheet, which says:

Take cylinder bore x .0050 for top ring and
cylinder bore x .0055 for second ring
min. of .015 for oil rails (which are already at .030) ???

Obviously the 2 things I want to avoid are the ring ends touching after they are heated and excessive blow-by. I can live with a little blow-by, I'll just get a catch can. I need opinions asap, as I planned on starting tonight for sure. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Mike.

The Spec gaps do not take into consideration the boost you are going to run. You top ring should be a little larger than stock. Liek Dino said into the 20's is fine. I run 22.

The second ring, I alway go with the largest Spec for the motor.

Terry

Well, I just got off the phone with JE, and this is what they said:

The .017 for the top ring and .019 for the 2nd ring would be fine, since 15 psi isn't that high.

If I wanted to play it safe, he said that a .020 for the top and .022 for the 2nd would be fine also.

He also said that if the oil rail supports are already at .030 out of the box, that's fine. As long as its over .015, it shouldn't matter as long as it isn't rediculously large.

If this sounds good, chime in and give me the OK, and that's what I'll do. I trust you guys more than someone over the phone, who probably hasn't had much experience with our powerplant.

Once again, thanks in advance.

You dont want the second ring gap to be larger. The only reason you make the gap for the top ring larger is because of the added heat to a boosted motor.

Fuck the JE people, call a few engine builders that specialize in import motors and take thier advise.

I was just wondering are the wiseco piston ring gaps the same as JE pistons. Sorry for the post high jack.

Anyone?

C'mon guys, I want to start filing today!

Do you think I should do .022 for the top ring and .020 for the 2nd?

What about the oil rails, is .030 ok?

I did .019 on my top ring and .021 on my second ring on the 12.5 comp engine. I recently poppd my head off and have no signs of problems (as a matter of fact I just put it back on emoji)

Since you are boosting, I would do .020 and .022. THIS IS JUST WHAT I WOULD DO ON A "LOWER" BOOST MOTOR. I have used JE's quite a bit (as have other builders I know) and these numbers are in line with what they would do (depending on the application).

Thanks, Bullett! Thats what I'll do. I was doing some research over on tuners, and that seems to be the general concensus.
