#108404, "What does this piece do?"

This is from a pic I used to explain to someone on another forum something i was talkign about.

In any case, the circled part with the big "?"... what is that? I noticed the other day that the wire going to it had been somehow broken in two.

Anyway, just curious as to what this is. I have no idea, but wondering if it would cause bad gas mileage? I just replaced my plugs and stuff, and the last $50 I put in lasted about half as long as normal. Seems like it's ok now though, but I also soldered the wire back together, so not sure if it was a bad tank of gas, or that little thing?

Thanks in advance.

That looks like the thing (don't know what it's called) that is supposed to reduce interference to your radio from the engine electronics. I don't know why it's located there though it's supposed to be on the front of the head on the right hand side.

Project 2.4/Big ass turbo now underway....

Right hand being driver's side? So it seems in the correct location. If that's all it does, then I'm not too worried about it. I listen to the radio a few times a year, really.

It's a capacitor... not totally crucial for anything. Broken wires should be easy enough to fix, though.

95 and some 96's had it located on the valvecover. not all models are mounted on the block.

It's called a condenser, and as stated, it's to reduce EMI. I installed a nice stereo in my cougar years ago and was presented with a horrible buzz that perfectly matched my RPMs.

We used to wire in suppressors (years ago). Worked fine. I presume that you could still get them at your local car audio shop.

I don't remember how I ended up getting rid of it. I don't have a radio in it anymore, but I know that I eventually got rid of it.

I remember something about a ground loop isolator, but that's about it, and ran it's own power & ground directly off the battery.

The original radio didn't do it, but it was only an AM radio with no 8-track. The stereo I had the biggest problem with was an Alpine tape deck with 6-disk changer. I'm thinking the tape head is what picked up the EMI, although I never used tapes.
