I think i broke something due to wheel hop or something else..... My stupidity.

Thismorning, i hop in the car and drive to work. I notice the smell of something burning but couldn't pinpoint it.

Like an asshat, i launched my car at 3k after work hanging a right and proceeded to redline up until 3rd gear before letting off and chilling out. I'm riding around with the music up and notice a ticking noise that is audible at 4k. I turn the music down. Ticka-ticka-ticka...... I dont know why but i freaked out thinking i fucked up my transmission or another axle..... I got home, put her in nuetral and popped the hood. To my amazement, the ticking is comming from the block....on the passenger side. Something is fucked somewhere in cylinder 1. (i'm hoping maybe something fell in the timing cover but i doubt it. It ticks in idle and i'm assuming all the way to redline but i didn't rev it that high. The oil was still kinda clear when i checked it two weeks ago. I checked it a few minutes ago and it's black as tar and pissed all the way up the dipstick. It's still full, just black. I didn't see any metal shavings.

It had been popping up here and there and i had to push it back in every time i'm under the hood leading me to believe crankcase pressure had something to do with it.

Tomorrow, i'm going to get up bright and early and take the head off/drop the pan and then pull the block out from under the car to investigate. Scooby doo style. I'm not the least bit bummed out because if my bottom end is hosed, it's upgrade time. F a stock rebuild. emoji

I have the best luck ever! Well, not really but i'm looking at this as a positive thing. Lol.

You could just drop the pan and see if there's some slack in #1, or pull the rod cap and look at the bearings. Also pull the valve cover and check your rockers & lash adjusters.

That's exactly what i'm going to do.

Hopefully, something is jacked bad but fixable.

It definately sounds like the block though. It's cold as shit and damp out. No dice today. Maybe thursday. I'm in no rush really since the car isn't going anywhere.

The verdict.

I spun rod bearing number 1.

Yay!

So what can i do, get my crank fixed and have the machine shop order me the proper bearing or what?

Yes, take the crank and have them check & turn it. They'll tell you what size you'll need. Take the #1 piston & rod, too, so they can check if it's out of round. Our stock rods cannot be resurfaced, so that may need to be replaced also.

Alright ladies and gents, here's an update!

I just got done pulling the pan. I tapped on rod 1 and rod four. They sound just about the same. It got dark and i've been working on the car for a while so i said to hell with it and called it a night. I'll pull the cap tomorrow.

Question, if the bearing isn't spun, can i just put it back together as is and torque to spec? I'm starting to suspect a bad lifter...... This doesn't bother me though. I needed to re-do the oil pan gasket and put my new oil pan on anyway.

Question 2, my oil filter is stuck like a mofo. I bent my oil filter wrench all to hell. I got it to turn a good bit with a screwdriver through it but the filter is almost torn in half now and was fighting me every step of the way. Damn purolator. I've never had a problem with any other oil filter on any other vehicle. Any idea how to remove it? Any idea what caused it? I had a gasket on it, i oiled that with clean oil and also oiled the threads. From now on, k&n filters only. Atleast i can take a ratchet to it if it ever gets stuck. I may even look into a serviceable filter when i can afford it.

Next. The condition of my oil.... It was a little dark but still had a brown tinge to it with no coking found in the pan or in the filter. I also didn't find a single metal shaving. I had enough oil in it. I really hope it's an upper engine problem. I'd be more than happy to pay $15 for a lifter from partstrain.com if it's a lifter. I've got my fingers crossed on that. I'll try to pull the head tomorrow and get back with you. I'll have my gf leave her camera so i can take pics. emoji

When i rotated my crank to tap the caps, i heard hissing coming from the engine. Like a vaccum suck. Normal? It was comming from the block, not my now downpipeless manifold or air filter.....

As always, thanks. My car wouldn't have made it very far without 2gnt's help and support. Dino's april fools prank about broke my heart!

Goodnight sweetheart...yes its time to go...bum bum bum bum bum...good night sweetheart yes I am one little a$$hole......bum bum bum bum....

If it is a lifter and you have to change it out. Change it out with the 3g lifters heard there better. So check it out

I'm back.

Here's how my day went.

I started by getting that stupid, mangled oil filter off. Next, i tapped rod caps again, getting the same noises i did before.

I pulled a bunch of shit off, including the valve cover. I went to go put the oil pan back on so i could get the head off. I noticed what looked like scratches in the bottom of the pan were actually metal shavings..... Sweet! Not.

I wanted to pull the head today but i have no idea how to get the passenger side motor mount bracket off. The mount itself was cake. Chances are good i'm just going to pull the engine if i can find somebody to loan me a cherry picker...which probably wont happen. Ofcourse, i'll have to pull more money out of my ass and buy one.

I'm just going to leave the car alone for a while. It's pissing me off. I wish i had somewhere to park it where i didn't have to look at it.

Fun couple of weeks. I kill my car and find out my gf is pregnant. Timing couldn't have been better.

Any tips on getting that stupid motor mount bracket off? Nothing is in the way really aside from the inner fender. Those bolts are rediculously long. The crossmember is already off so all the motor is being supported by is a jack, the rear roll stop and the driver's side trans mount.

Goodnight sweetheart...yes its time to go...bum bum bum bum bum...good night sweetheart yes I am one little a$$hole......bum bum bum bum....

Did you ever pull the rod caps off to see? You could reuse your bearings (match back to cylinder # and side), but if you've got it apart, you can get a new set for like $30-40.

So...um...how did you come to this conclusion of you never pulled the rod caps?

Caps come off soon. I was going to pull the head but after removing the valve cover and checking the lifters, i decided i'm better off pulling everything.

If the damage is too bad, i'm probably going to buy a fair mileage neon motor and swap blocks and try to make some of my money back selling everything on the motor on neons.org or craigslist.

If the crank is fine (which i doubt with the luck i've had with the car), i'll just do a ring job and slap a set of new main and rod bearings in. It all depends.

Yes I would like to know how you found this out, if you haven't pulled the caps?

Am I missing something here?
