#10824, "Lifters ticking in 420a"

I just started using Mobil 1 syn 2-3 weeks ago. When i had my afx udp installed, some of the guys said that my lifters were making a ticking sound. During normal driving the noise is very quite, but present. Is the ticking a sign of something wrong?

The guy who told me about the ticking said that it may just be 1-2 lifters that need replacing. Should i fix this right away or wait it off a bit longer? And how much should most places charge for these things? The guy told me $60, but i'am not sure if labor was apart of it.

Nah, lifters going bad do not require the head to be rebuilt. You can get a full set of solid lash adjustors from www.crco.com, and they are superior to the hydraulic lash adjustors that Chryslebishi decided to use. The hydraulic lifters wear with the motor but CRCO found that the solid lifters would stay in spec for hundreds of thousands of miles, not something to really worry about. And no, they don't tick. Hey Kory: CRCO usually does the lifters for the 4G63, but a little modification makes them work on the 420a. The mitsu motors like to tick from the lifters. Might want to pick up a set if you wind up throwing the 6 bolt into the X...

make sure the lifter ticking sound is not confused with Injector pulsing. Some of my Honda/Acura friends hear that on my car and actually told me that I have crank-walk. Of course I gave them a blank stare.. emoji

Okay now i'm lost. can someone tell me strait up what part needs to be fixed/replaced. Lash adj ers what the heck is that. I went to crco.com seems like they only offer it for the gst and gsx's.

I don't know much about the internals of engines so please bear with me. I've sreached through the service manual online, still have no frekIn clue to what u guys are talking about.

As for the ticking sound where is it coming from? Come on ppl i don't know shizt about our engines, heck engines in general.

Kory - a rebuild is not a thing i want to do. Cash isn't flowing well
right now.

Well, lifter tick is not a big deal, but it might just be injector tick. If it is lifter tick, then just consider the Concept racing lifters. I am going with some when I build my block and head.

Before anyone can tell you what to replace you have to know whats ticking. No one can tell you from the back of a keyboard, only speculate. Lifters ticking, spun bearing and sometimes injectors all sound like lifters ticking. Injectors ticking should be easy enough to determine with your ear pushed down by em. Spun bearing sounds like its coming from up top. You probably need a shop to use a scope and determine whats really ticking.

You can also get the PT Cruiser lifters from Howell Auto.

the ticking by the udp could also be the a/c thingy in the front bumper, right?

My lifters have been ticking fairly loudly, especially when cold, since 20k miles. Now (60k) I'm turbo, I beat on the car, and the engine hasn't blown up. *now knocking fiercly on wood* I don't know anything about heads from a mechanical standpoint, but I think lifter tick is fine in moderation. I always use Mobil1 Synth 10-30, and 91 octane gas.

Of course tomorrow my head will probably disintegrate....

hahaha...i went to get an oil change and the reason it wasw ticking was because my antifreeze resevoir was loose and was rubbing up against my a/c belt pulley. check that first. But i asked them what they thought it could be...because i told them about your dilemma and they said make sure u ahve it checked out but it was more than likely nothing big...i hope i put ur mind at eaze. I dont think ur daily driver would have spun a bearing but i guess it is possible.

LoL!
I did what Stan2gnt mentioned to do. I heard the ticking coming from the injectors and not from the top of the head. I'm 99% sure now that its the fuel injectors causing the tick, not the lifters.
Btw how do you get rid of the tick? Fuel injection cleaning, that was my first thought.
