This is done for a member looking for my original post of checking your timing in this manner. Since I cant even find it, I am posting it to make it easier.


Concept: Your engine is together but the timing is off and you did not mark you new cam gears only to find out you cant get it right and dont want to tear the timing apart!

I will make this a write up when i have pictures in the next week or so.

Proceedure

1. Remove the valvecover, coilpack, and plug wires as an assembly.

2. Remove the spark plugs (to make rotating the engine easier)

3. Using an 18mm wrench and the cam bolt; rotate the engine clockwise.

4. Locate the little holes in the camshafts between cylinder 1 and 2. notice how these holes are 1/4" in diameter

5. Insert a 10" or longer 1/4" Drive extension into Cylinder 1 through the spark plug hole. You should be able to feel the piston near the top.

6. Rotate the engine back and forth with the 18mm wrench and cam bolt. Notice how the extension moves up and down. Rotate the engine so that the extension is at its peak.

7. Now look at the holes in the camshaft between cylinder 1 and 2, a 1/4" Drive extension will fit into these holes, place the male end of the extension into each hole.

8. Loosen the cam gear adjustment bolts in your cam gears.

9. Using the 18mm wrench with the cam bolt, adjust the cam so that its respective extension (the extension in that same camshaft) is PERPENDICULAR to the valvecover gasket mating surface of the head. Tighten your cam adjustment bolts while holding the camshaft in this spot.

11. Do this to the remaining camshaft.

12. Remove the extensions from the cams and Cylinder #1.

13. Rotate the engine clockwise 2 turns and recheck that your cams are timed in the same spot using the above mentioned methods.

14. Re-install the valvecover, coil pack w/plugwires and spark plugs.

15. Unplug the ECU for 2 minutes to reset it since I am sure you tripped an engine code for your poor timing

16. Start your engine and obsearve the idle. Your timing is now "zero'd"
