so i took out my sensor and the plastic gear was on it. it was a little lose and if i push it down a little it wont read on my gauge which when i pulled it out it was down position and not reading. but if i pull it together it works great. does this mean i need a new sensor or can i tighten the one i have. or is this even the problem why its not working. i did put it back in and nothing is reading.

Sounds like the sensor is dying. There's no way to tighten the gear to the sensor, as the only thing that holds it in place are the two plastic tabs on the sensor body. When you push down on it, you might be moving the magnet inside the sensor enough that the pickup can't read it, which would indictate to me that something inside is worn or wearing down.

I've been having a problem with my speed sensor too. The weird thing is that it shows my speed when I'm accelerating, but if I'm cruising or slowing down the speed goes back to 0. Could this mean my sensor is going bad?
