I've done a little bit of searching, and am curious. I know that due to they very nature of a catalytic convertor it's efficency is naturally decreased over time. Does anyone know what the average life expectancy of one of our stockers is?

I'm over 160k and mine's still functioning properly, I've seen cars with 300k and they were still working.

I've noticed it has a lot to do with keeping the rest of the car running well. if things are running properly and not sending excess fuel through the cat or burning it up cause of running lean they can last quite a long time.

it also depends on the material and construction quality. metal core units last considerable longer than ceramic ones and hold up to more abuse.

On a perfectly working engine, a cat will never wear out.

It's the hydrocarbons in misfires/partial misfires (too rich) that cause the cat to over heat, and eventually melt the catalyst, causing it to clog itself, or fall apart and rattle.

An engine burning oil will cause the oil to build up in the cat and have a similar effect.

A inexpensive 5 gas analysis will tell you the condition of your cat, as the rear o2 sensor only checks oxygen content, which is only part of the conversions it has to do.

A cat doesn't always let the rear o2 sensor know it's bad, and can still be the cause of failing emissions.

cat /kæt/ - noun, verb, cat·ted, cat·ting.
–noun
1. a small domesticated carnivore, Felis domestica or F. catus, bred in a number of varieties
2. shorthand for catalytic converter so you don't have to spell it out 1,000 times
