#105818, "misfire?"

hey guys...well my engine is rebuilt FINALLY and runs, but i've encountered a problem and not sure where to start to find out EXACTLY what it is before i spend a ton of money in repairs. I've searched all over and seem to find topics that sctratch the surface but nothing real in depth unless i'm missing something.

my car has trouble starting up. last week, i'd drive it a bit and it would start to hesitate then i gotta play with the gas pedal at a stop light to keep it from dieing. then when i get going it slowly climbs from 1100 to 2100 (meanwhile my gas pedal is 60% down...then it catches and takes off. then driving down the road it dies and grabs dies and grabs and sputters a bit then smooths out for a few miles. then when i stopped to get something to eat...it would not start up AT ALL. got fuel in the rail and everything and checked the plugs, running a little on the lean side. pulled the wires and plugged em back in...still nothing. ok well, 3 hours later, my buddy that was with (went to mechanic school) wiggled my cam sensor and then it started up. now in order for it to start i gotta wiggle that sensor. well that is one prob, don't have money to fix it now but will soon, but it still acts up going down the road and at stop lights. is this valve float? misfire? fucked CAS? blowby? what could be the cause of all this. any help would be great...thanks

Could be a bunch of things.

Are you getting a flashing check engine light? That's what mine did when i had an active misfire. I'd have the gas floored in first and accelerate like a mack truck with a full trailer from a full stop.

If your idle is fucked, IAC might be off. Your throttle cable could be frayed and catching the outer wire. That could cause your butterfly to stick open just enough to have an abnormally high idle too. Your cam angle sensor could quite possibly be the culprit here. I'd get that replaced asap as it's not an expensive part and is easily found at junkyards. If you happen to come across one, put it in your pocket and forget about it on your way out.....no harm, no foul. I dont condone that but you get the drift. No reason at all why getting it replaced shouldn't be a top priority.

You should also check for vaccum leaks. If you smoke, go around your intake system with a lit cigarette and follow the smoke. If you dont smoke, use incense or something.

You can try replacing the cam position sensor. For your car being pretty much stock, a rough idle like your describing could be related to the timing on the motor as well.

i know when we changed the timing belt after the rebuild b/c it get raped (belt rubbed on the tensioner and wor the inner outside belt down to the steel bands) we could not get timing PERFECT...instead was half tooth retarded at the cam gears, so that can explainn idle. i replaced the IAC with a junkyard one and that brought my idle from 4500 down to 1100-1500 rough. i priced a NEW cam sensor for shits and giggles and it was ~60 from advance...new crank sensor ~75 from advance...but unfortunately with me having to buy books and stuff for my classes on campus, that money isn't available. when i get some cash, i'll replace it (2 wks maybe) but until then will it be a bad thing to keep running it or will it damage something?

I'd say it's a 50/50 split on something else messing up driving with it like it is.

No way in hell i'd drive my car in that condition, fyi.
