Yeah so ummm..... feel free to laugh at me everyone. I don't know if this was user error, the tensioner failed, or the belt was justed fucked from the beginning. So after getting the car back together letting it idle for quite some time and sounding wonderful driving it about 20 miles before any extended trips and being very proud of myself, on the 'test' today (a 50ish mile trip from home to the fiance's apartment) the car died on me within sight of her exit. Pretty much looks like the belt split in two. I'm expecting the worst but hoping for the best. What's left of the belt is still on and still tight so if it didn't jump timing then the valves may be ok but I'll have to wait and see.
Anyways, I'm pretty bummed b/c I was all proud of myself from fixing the car and I know odds are whatever happened was user error anyone got opinions on why the belt would do what it did? Too much/not enough tension? Hit something, idk. I was really looking forward to cleaning up under the hood this weekend and showing off the new changes too bad you guys gotta see them like this.

And of course I had to get one of it on the flat bed...
Not sure when I'll get a chance to take a look at it, probably not for a couple weeks and then who knows when I'll have time to fix it. THis is really frustrating as I was hoping to take it to Mitsu day in September at E-town and run it to see what kinda times/traps I could get on the stock bottom end. Hopefully it'll be up and running before then but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Man Corey, that really sucks. Sorry to hear about your luck. I hope it's not too bad and can get fixed soon enough for your event.

By looking at that pic of 1/2 a timing belt with good tension, my first impression is that your valves are ok, and your engine stopped because the half of the timing belt that ripped off is mangled around your pullies and basically just roped down your crank like a bull
Somehow that side of the belt snagged, and the torque of the motor ripped the belt longitudinally (it's weakest plane.) What the belt snagged on, I have no idea. Possibly it was rubbing up against the housing, which caused it to fray, the fray became larger and eventually the a piece was large enough to entangle itself while moving. It then pulled itself off like a string off your sleeve. I think/hope it will be OK
OTOH, I may just be an extremely optimistic personality

I'm really hoping that is the case, I probably won't be able to take a look at it until next weekend though. Sucks cause it seemed like I finally took care of the problems and was getting ready to log a few runs with the wideband and make some adjustments with the sfmu.
On a side note, IMO my freshly polished intake mani looks pretty good in that pic if I do say so myself.

I'd like to know also, if you where runnin with out it there could have been a small piece of debris that flew up in there. Happened to my H22 accord and the belt looked like a Cat-of-nine-tails when it was all said and done. Dont know how but a small piece of gravel was all wrapped up around the crank inside of what was left of the belt.

I'm going to vote 'No'. I don't run an upper cover on my timing belt either and it's been fine for months.
Corey, whenever you do take the time to check everything out, are you going to attempt to find out if something failed or was assembled incorrectly or are you just going to replace the parts?
Did you make sure that the timing belt was properly tensioned whenever you reinstalled it? Anything that you can think of that may have caused this problem?

Honestly I'm not sure what I'm gonna do yet. I'm going to go with the odds are in favor of it being the result of screwing something up during assembly being it was my first time. When I pulled the pin out of the tensioner, it didn't slide right out and I think I attributed it to the fact that the tensioner had bent the nail I used a bit and didn't think twice about it. In hindsight, I should have gotten a straight nail and made sure it slid in and out easily
I'm assuming this was the culprit, if the timing still appears to be on, then I'll probably just replace the belt and check and double check to make sure the tensioner is set perfectly. I think I'll probably go with an OEM belt too this time.
Then again, maybe it was debris from the road or the belt rubbed somewhere. I'm going to try and diagnose the cause, but it's most likely not going to be until next weekend regardless.

Cool. I would use a small drill bit or an allen key if you don't have the grenade pin from the tensioner. I believe I used a drill bit the last time I did mine and had no problems sliding it in or out. You just need to be careful. A small drill bit like that will be somewhat brittle.
