on the 420a does anyone know what the height of the pintle should be onthe iacv. i bought one from advance auto gpsorenson model the pintle is shorter does this matter? thanx for any help. also just wanted to say this site has been big help discovering a once hidden gem

The pintle height varies... there is no "resting" position. I would suggest installing the IAC and testing the outcome. If you have a poor idle, swap pintles. You can unscrew the old pintle mechanically (with pliers) or electronically (with the right equipment).

is there any one set "free standing height for the pintle? see im wondering the same thing as ive got an IAC from a 2gnt, and one from a Jeep TB conversion,and ive swapped the pintles back and forth on them. now ive lost track of how far they need to thread in. so im curious to know if there is one free set height or if the computer just takes care of that.

That's what I meant when I said there is no "resting" position; there is no free standing position. The pintle is a ringed shaft moved up and down by an internal gear. Don't let the sheath and spring fool you, the pintle itself is not spring loaded -- the only way it moves in and out is when the stepper motor engages the internal gear.

If you just thread it in reasonably far, the ECU will take it from there. When it tries to open the IAC motor as far as possible, it'll do somewhat of a self-calibration measure, as the pintle can physically only move so far. It's hard to explain, but you'll be fine.
