I'm in process of checking and adjusting the timing on a 420A engine.
Is it OK to run the engine, to check to see how it is running after adjusting the timing, without the crankshaft pulley/damper???

might get a touch more vibration, no worse than w/ an underdrive pulley, just remember, you're only running off the batery, no alternator to charge it

Just rotate the motor six times by hand. if the timing is still in line, you're fine.

I've done it many times,no pulley..its fine, dont worry about it..Just dont let it run tooo long, or you will drain the battery.

Thanks to all for the answers.

I wanted to run it without the pulley in case I needed to readjust the timing.
The timing was initially off by 1 tooth, and I set the timing and it is now dead on, but I still have the problem with a misfire between 900 & 1100 rpm when the tranny is in Park or Neutral(an earlier post for this problem).
The timing being off by 1 tooth didn't seem to make any difference at all.
