Im planning on getting a turbo in the future (arnt we all?) but i was wondering if one could get a decent amount of power out of their 420a's without any kind of forced induction. im not talking about 300 ponies or anything just like 180-200 hp. (enough to keep up wit a gsr. damn i hate those things.)
should i just save for a turbo?
any input would be greatly appreciated.

Its very possible. With the right mods and a good enough driver, its definitely possible.

Definately possible. I plan on going all motor at first then possibly turbo at low boost on a high compression motor. I want to run 11.5:1 compression with Cams, and all the bolt ons. If I have the cash maybe get with Skrilla and get a stroker kit. I want to be pushing 200hp before I think about turbo. And I would like to say, I want Cams!!!! Crane hurry up! (althought I guess it's a good thing they are not out... I don't have the money for them right now anyway.

This should actually be a VERY easy thing to do. With a well ported and polished cylinder head, 11:1 compression, and the Crane Cams that will be available 6.1.01, you should be able to produce about 200hp. From there, you will have to do bottom end work. Forged rods and pistons, lightened and balanced crank and obviously, fuel control.

My goal is to turn dyno rollers at over 200hp. That should be good enough for mid to low 14s at over 94MPH. In otherwords, faster than a stock turbo car with no turbo.

I have a cylinder head that's been worked on that's waiting for the cams to be thrown in. Once that happens, I'll make sure to let everyone know what the results are.

Beautiful, who is doing the head work for you? did you get a spare head? My plans are to mill the head to raise compression with a thin gasket, then when I want to put a turbo on drop compression slightly with a thick HG, but still run higher than stock compression and low boost. Well anyway let me know how it all goes, I am VERY interested in hearing about the results.

I just visited the Crane Cams booth at a car show in Carlisle Pa. Crane Cams now offers cams for the Neon or as we all know the 420A motor. They also have Valve springs with Titanium retianers. I was just wondering, What type of block does the PT Cruiser have? Is it also a 420A? Crane Cams also has parts for that motor and I was wondering if their is a differance? A 2.4 crank in my motor would be nice!

...mill the head and get a thinner HG and raise compression to 11.5:1 (about $160) with high Compression Drag Cams(crane) $450 and WebCam has regrinds that are also good(courtesy of Eric R.). Titanium retainers and Double Valves springs from RRE(yes for the 2GNT - WebCams product also) another $350 and PT cyl. head rocker arms and lifters, another $300. AEM cam gears at 200-300 dollars, SS oversized valves for high temp, continuous revs $300. Port the head and 5 angle Valve job, Intake and Exhaust, a little more Combustion chamber work and port match everything from the intake to the exhaust manifold about another 600-800 dollars. That should net between 180 and 200HP easy, if you have a stand alone then you could safely push a 9G redline (no exaggeration)~800-1500. With all that you should easily make 200HP plus and all on 92octane pump gas. With all that you should be chirpin' 3rd and wupin 2G-T's.
