heres the thing, i did what the book said, line the cam marks and then the crank shaft mark and your all set. the car still did not start, it was getting everything it needed but still did not turn over. (sorry, this is a add on from my last post. CAR WILL NOT START, HELP!!) but i called a my shop person before i burned my car into ashs for help. PLEASE TELL ME YOU HAVE HEARED OF THIS, ANYONE. He told me that the timing was wrong and to put the cams marks veritcal and then put the crank mark at five o'clock, and then should start right up. what the hell, is that right

cams 180* out? you get two turns of the crank per 1 turn of the cams. I did that my first time (still don't know how) car wouldn't start for nothin, got em flipped back around and fired right up

Either: Your shop buddy is a complete moron and will be buying you new valves since there is a good chance you will bend several if you crank the motor over with the cam gear marks both facing 12 oclock vertical.
OR
2.) You misinterpreted what he was trying to explain which is to place both the camshafts holes facing up. There are 2 holes/divets on the camshafts themselves near the cam gear end. These both need to be facing up. This is the correct camshaft position. Then Attach the cam gears with the cam pins and follow the procedure in the FSM or reference the pics AZDAVE posted for how the cam gears and crankshaft gear should be lined up. If you have 1 cam with the hole up and the other with the hole down then 1 will be 180 out and you will have no compression.

Actually, you should have the intake cam gear dowel groove facing down and the exhaust gear groove facing up. The cam gears have the alignment grooves on the bottom of the mounting hole. Azdave's pic shows it perfectly. You should be able to read the intake cam" 2.0Front 609" and the exhaust cam lettering should be upside down.

I did, and thanks. I had no idea you could use those holes as guides for setting the timing. Probably would've made it easier the first time I did it. Raise your hand if you learned something new today,

Using the dowel pins is easy if you haven't already got the cam gears in place along with having the rest of the timing n place. Its easy to quickly pop off the valve cover to visually check the 2 cam holes/divets to make sure that they are both lined up correctly. Easier than pulling the belt, cam gears, etc.
