#104201, "I'm Stumped!! Kinda Long"

So last tuesday i'm arriving home, backing my car in the driveway and upon parking the car i let it idle for a moment. it would idle fine for a moment then drop as if about to die but then come back up. Upon inspection of the problem i foune the vacuum hose to the PCV Valve was broken at the valve cover and had left an oil deposit down by the spark plug holes. After fixing that with new hose i restarted the car and i heard an awful noise coming from the motor (possible the top end). At this point i shut the car off. After that it didn't start for a couple days. i have replaced the fuel pump, tested for spark (getting spark) Fuel pressure is good. Test and ok'd Crank sensor, Cam sensor, MAP sensor. i did find a bad o-ring at the fuel line to the fuel rail and have replaced. I was in the process of pulling the oil pan to check for shavings when my dad suggested spraying some WD-40 into the throttle body. with no oil in the car it started, i then shut it off, replaced the oil filter and filled with oil. Started the car again and it ran like it was on 3 cylinders. now it won't run. Anyone have any idea for me??

never start a car with no oil.....never a good idea even for a minute.

Now it wont start....ok do you have fuel, spark, and compression? When you crank it over try spraying starting fluid into the TB. If it fires you have a fuel issue. Either no injector pulse or fuel pump or blocked line ect.

not stateing you dont know anything about cars in general but they are all the same. star turbo is right eith no spark, no fuel or no compression. if you start to eliminate those you should find your problem

Those are super generic answers though. Tell the poor guy HOW to check those things. I know it would've helped me instead of having me wrestle with my car for 6 months trying to find odd problems.

Well, we do have this search utility which allows any registered user to search through thousands of posts/threads going back to the late 90s. Surely someone has had the time to post up details on how to check for spark or use starter fluid in all that time...

Of course, if that is too much to ask, they could always try searching Google for things like "testing for spark, testing fuel pressure," or even "power balance test."

When all else fails, ask the monkey at Autozone if they have starting fluid, where it is, and then, read the directions on the back of the can. If they can't read, then they can ask the counter guy how to use it.

It's not rocket science.

EDIT:
A bone...

Okay, but you gotta understand, bro. There's TONS of stuff to search through which takes days, when an answer from someone knowledgeable (like yourself) can be given in a few minutes. Those oh-so informative posts we search for always have people split 50/50 on what wire or fluid line is which, and nobody ever posts the resolution.

This is a discussion board, not a sticky board. Or am I wrong in that?

I'm a long-time message board user, just not here. And I just think sometimes we get caught up in that whole "search for it" thing, when really we just run people off with that attitude. Plus it's not helpful at all.

I know I'd much rather have someone like you or the other good bros here tell me how they did something, because they can remember what's what. Not some generic answer I'd get from Autozone, or crap from searching. A direct answer from you guys is priceless. You guys on here know what usually goes wrong, instead of searching the whole system. You can say, "This is what usually goes wrong there" and you're almost always right. Experience is golden. Keep that in mind. Your knowledge is valuable to me since I'm new to this DSM thing. And I'm sure it's valuable to many, many others.

well then i would guess i have no compression, in i've checked the fuel pressure, and the spark. Guess it's time to pull the head again!!!

you say you have pressure, but are the injectors firing? if they're not getting signal for some reason you can have all the pressure in the world and not be getting any fuel, double check that, like others have said, get the can of starting fluid, if you're getting fuel that way then check the compression, don't just go pulling the head for no reason. a doctor wouldn't do heart surgery for an infected toe.

Don't assume anything, diagnose as much as you can before you tear down an engine (do a compression test first if you assume low compression). Fuel and spark have to be at the correct time/amount.

Guess i learned something new....I can start my car with no oil and its just liek starting it with oil......anyone who reads this be very careful with SBR420a advise. Starting a car with no oil is nothing like starting it with oil.

By the time the oil puimp makes 4 revolutions it has produced oil pressure and by the time the car fires there is oil pressure in the bearings. Firing the car with no oil when the first cylinder fires places unneccasary stress on the rod bearings as well as the main bearings.

Use the search function we have explained how to test compression as well as fuel and spark. I am done repeating myself on this board and spoon feeding people who do not want to put forth the effort and I am tired of all the inaccurate info spread by newbies.

If you search and cannot find how to test something then I will gladly guide you through the process.

Since the car did run for a short term while you were galling the bearings then i would expect the compression to be at least enough to run. Target your testing to fuel and spark. Go get a stupid can of starting fluid.
