what the hell? well last nite I took an SI and then came home and let my car cool off. This morning I heard a chugging sound coming from right side of the block or could be coming from the tranny somewhere. It was an ugly sound, kinda like my engine was gargling. also, in the area around the spark plugs there was real black oil and seemed to have water but I don't know. The oil was low so put a quart which brought it back around the middle. The sound went away after I got to work but after work the cel went on. I got home and did the key dance and it came up 12...31...55. I might be wrong but I paid close attention. What do these numbers mean? This is what I get for wasting an si, cheeesh

i do'nt know about the error codes.. but ya better hope you don't have oil and water sitting up near your spark plugs.. cause that kinda situation is usually a blown gasket or something of that sort.. from what i've seen...

Code 31 is your EVAP crap. I have it to and I have no idea why and how to get rid of it. I know there are alot of people on here that have had problems with that so they might have more info on it.

well I found out that it was just oil around the spark plugs? what does that mean? Does anyone know what my engine is doing to itself? Any recommendations? I am going to pull my spark plugs out and change them, they haven't been changed ever I think>probably not a great idea of letting them go so long but what can I say. What should I be looking for?

aiight man, i dont think anybody really answered your first question or helped u at all,

im not one to talk, cuz i dont know much.

maybe the spark plug seals are F**kd up. and the rings in cylinder one. i would do a compression check to see what the other cylinders have compared to the one with oil in it.

hope that helps, tia

I have the same cel from the evap. I took mine to the dealer and they found nothing wrong. They said there was no reason for the code to have came up. so they cleared it, and tried to charge me $120 (which i did'nt pay) and the next day the cel came back. I've heard of a few ppl here having it, i think theres a sensor or a diaphram, somthing that is bad that causes the code, but the evap won't effect the cars drivability. And if ya need to get it smogged, just reset the ecu right befor ya pull in to the smogg place that should keep it off long enought to do the test and get it passed
And the oil is probaby from the gaskets around the spark plugs. You'll know when you goto take out the plug wires and one or more are covered in oil. Its an easy fix, just go to the dealer or a parts store and get a new manifold gasket and spark plug gaskets, then come home and change the gaskets. You'll only need a little bit of gasket maker for the edges, and a 8mm deep socket.

the oil seems to be coming from the valve cover, is that what youre talking about, I'm gonna go change that gasket and find the one youre talking about for the spark plugs. I wish I could do a compression test but I don't have access to one of those tools. Also how do you reset your computer, I have heard many people talk about it but I don't know how and where to do it at. In case I come to a standstill, what am I going to have to unbolt to take off the valve cover. It is the six bolts around, the wires the distributer and that should be it right? hey what are some good numbers for gapping the spark plugs, I'm gonna buy some of those too, and one heat range higher work well?

is that kinda like the easy way to do it or is that the proper way to do it? that is going to clear every code in my whole car including the stereo. If it comes down to that I probably will pull the negative terminal. hopefully the light will go off the way it always had in the past, so what should I gap my plugs? I did a search and found some of you guys did anything between .040 and .050. Sound good or am I missing something?

also, I bought the set of gaskets for 25.00, does anyone know if the grommets come with this set, and if they don't what size grommets are they so I can buy them separately?

Sorry dude. yes that is the right way of doing it. If you still have the stock radio with the security code you will have to enter it after doing it. Now if you have the $2000.00 scan tool you would not have to. On the gasket set I don't know never hade to buy one yet. And yes we do give a f**k. Have a Nice day.

sorry if that sounded rude, but I started getting frustrated with all this shit.plus this whole post is me talking to me. The autozone where I live gave me the wrong gasket but I already had taken off the valve cover. Plus before that, I had an 8mm socket but I needed a deep seated one to get over those 8mm bolts with screws on top of them. I tried and managed to get one off with just a 8mm wrench, f that, so I went got a deep seated one.

anyways, anyone know the right way to put that gasket on once I get it. everything has to be dry right. Do I have to wipe off all the oil? and also should I use some kind of adhesive when installing the new gasket. the old one seemed to have some kind of dark glue or tar holding it to the corners, what is that?

one more question, I gapped my new plugs to .050, the engine is idling a little bad, should I go lower say a .040 or higher, .055+, thanks

Go with a lower gap if it's idleing bad. I would say 0.040 or 0.045". Sorry don't know about the rest of your questions...
