#103765, "Total Rebuild help"

Okay, Ive read the entire sectiton on the 420a rebuild but I still have some questions...

Alright, I've given up on the swap idea, and Im going to go ahead and take the rebuild route. Ive got a link to a couple of rebuild kits that seem to look as if they are complete with all i need to start out. Ive found a motor completely rebuilt on ebay for a couple g's and wasnt sure whether you all had advice on whether I should build it myself witht the help of internet and manuals or buy one already rebuilt. And last but not least, once i get this power, which ever way I go, what kind of ecu work will i need to take part in. Do I need a new comp since I put in a new motor, or do I just need to adjust some things?

and since I will have this all taken apart is there anything else you guys feel I should go ahead and add while Im knee deep in it?

/cheer

as far as the rebuild goes the link wouldnt show for me. if you can afford to have the down time, you will learn a TON by doing the rebuild yourself and WHEN you have to do another it will be easier.
also if somthign goes wrong, there is only you to blame. if you do buy a prebuilt engine make sure it has atleast a 90day warrenty and better yet a 1 year one
btw i wouldnt order internals (bearings, pistons) till AFTER the block has been machined and final measurements are made

what are your end goals?
is this a back to stock rebuild or preping for turbo rebuild?

stock = no ecu work needed
turbo = no ecu work needed, as its all handled by your suplemental systems (ie MSnS) and you will add things to trick the stock ecu anyway

while you have everything out, some people delve into a fuel system, clutch work or transmission work.
there are lots of little things to do once the engine is out and your waiting for parts

I plan on grabbing a spare block for $2-300 getting it machined and let the shop tell me what size forged pistons i need (ie .20 .40 over) and giving those with rods to the shop letting them install it. then over a weekend yank out my current motor and bolt my head up to the "new block". This is probably the most efficient way of doing it as far as downtime is concerned. But this isnt really gonna help too much if you'll be doing head work as well. Oh and while the motors out, its a great time to do clutch and timing work! something to consider.
