... praying that the coolant coming out from under the car isn't coming from the head gasket.

That's how I spent my afternoon. Hopped onto I-95 heading to Savannah to pick up a couple parts from my favorite speed shop. Punched in in 3rd to get up to speed then all of a sudden- Cloud of white smoke behind the car smell of coolant in the cabin (SHIT). Quickly get back over to the right lane and pull over onto the shoulder. Pop the hood and there's coolant like all over everything behind the Valve cover (SHIT). Looking and looking Coolant spraying out from somewhere behind the head by cylinder 4 (SHIT). Get out the emergency tool kit from the trunk and pop off the AEM CAI. Coolant still spraying and I still can't see. Check Oil (not milky) Remove the bolt that holds the harness to the head. Bingo the heater hose closest to the head had split right behind the hose clamp. Took the clamp loose and pulled the hose off the water pipe. Cut it back 2 inches and reinstalled. Topped it off with the Gallon of water that I so wisely keep in the trunk.

All in all I was only there for about 1/2 an hour, but I was definately not happy about it. Oh don't worry I didn't even let the temp start to climb above normal operating temp.

I just fixed mine today, I had a small tear in it from over tightening the clamp.

I remember one time I punched it on the way out to my house and boom all of a sudden I'm smelling coolant and saying to myself "oh shit, what the hell happened." I pulled over, inspected the engine and sure enough I blew off one of those hoses as well. Simple fix.

LMAO. I was actually at Autozone one night picking up some other things. My ex was standing outside, leaning against the car while having a smoke when the hose popped. I'll never forget that look on her face.

OMGWTFPINATA!

She's just leaning against the front fender for a second or two when the hose lets loose. BOOM! And then there was steam and that rotten smell everywhere. Hahaha.

I picked up about three feet of generic heater hose and a jug of water before limping the car home. Drove a mile, parked, popped the hood, chilled with the AC fan going. Repeat.

It's been a couple years since that event. It's why I made sure to include plenty of slack in my replacement hoses. Should one go, I can likely cut the split section off and still connect it up so I can get home.

Yah one of the guys in our caravan coming home from the SO this year (wite96gs) blew that same part of the hose. He just took and plugged it off with 2 3/4" short extentions until we got home. The next day I changed mine just cause!

That also happend to me when I was in the middle of the country out in BFE. (bum fuck egypt), I luckily it didnt split to far so I just cut it and streched it out and reclamped to drive home.. However, my sister being the unmechanical person she is had it happen to her and she kept driving eventually sucking in coolent through the intake into the block, later i check and there is no compression in two cylinders.. at least i got to replace another engine block.

good thing to remember right after changing rad hoses and or a water pump, all the extra pressure can blow those poor neglected hoses to smithereens!

Same thing here...while driving to work one morning she blew. It was funny as hell looking out the rear view. You would have though I was laying down a smoke screen emoji

From that point on I carry space hose just in case.
