#103025, "Will this set up be ok to run without a turbo?????"

I am currently rebuilding my block and look at the Modern Performance Rebuild kits which includes the following:

Rod Bearing Set
Main Bearing Set
JE Piston Rings
Oil Pan Gasket Set
Oil Pump
Eagle Specialty Forged Rods
JE Pistons 8:8:1 .020 over
16 PT Cruiser Lifters
16 PT Cruiser Rockers
Timing Belt
Complete Head Gasket Set
Crane 180-0014 Cams
Fidanza Adjustable Cam Gear
Crane Titanium Valve Springs and Retainers

I believe this kit will give me a solid block that I can utalize a turbo kit on. It will be a few months before I can get the kit and I was wondering is it ok to run this setup without a turbo because of the Crane Cams 180-0014? I am also wanting 1mm oversized valves. Will I need new valve guides and seals? I am going to be taking the block and head to get work done(honed, port and polished, 3 angle valve job and bore the head to accept the oversized valves, resurface, basically the works). Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can run that setup without a turbo. As a mater of fact I have basically the same setup and I'm running without the turbo for awhile. The motor actually runs stronger than I had expected, but it is a complete dog compared to what it was with the turbo.

I waiting for parts of just about everything you have except I have Wisecos, and Crane 12s. And I thought I was getting it today in my top end KIT, but for some reason Howell didn't ship me the lifters, rockers, gasket kit, or t belt; all I got was the gears, cams, and springs. DAMNIT! Oh well I will call and see whats up tomorrow.(Sorry had to vent) You can run that set up without turbo. It will actually give it time to break in, as well as the clutch if you get one(HIGHLY recomend it).

I'm hooking up with the clutchmasters stage 4 clutch. i have heard a few compaints about Howell so I turned my cheek and went the other way. I'm gonna run it for about 1500 miles for a break-in. I'm looking for a paint/body tech who can help out and hang out and work on the car for a few days. kick some beers. i have to repaint it and put a body kit on along with some fenders also. know any????

Yeah, I probably won't be getting but one more thing from howell and thats the solid afx front mount. I am not happy with them. I went with the SB OFE stage 3. I have heard nothing but good things about it.

Ditch the crane 14 cams for either the crane 12's or crower 2 turbo cams.

I agree. I have the 14's and they do seem to give some small gain, but I have been having problems with high EGTs and I think that it has to do with the cams. I have read some of the neon guys have had the same issue with the Crane 14's. If I were you I would stay with the stock cams or go with something different. I think I'm going to try the 16's.

There sweet, check out cimotorsports.net. They have some good choices for rebuild kits. Wish I would have done that before I sent Howell my money.

I am getting gasket match, +1mm valves, 3 valve job. You want to make sure you have the least amount of restriction to flow. Good numbers come from good flow.

Local shop, does great work. Concept Illusions does it as well if you don't mind shipping your head.

highviewpunk check your pm regarding head work, we still havent gotten the cnc port design set in stone yet so were still doing the port work by hand as of now.. just to let you guys know if you plan to order anything please call in ahead of time to check stock , were out of alot of components right now and the companies cant keep up with our demand, thus probably why howell may be taking so long to ship.. we are starting to see some delays also, just a heads up!
