#102838, "TPS data logging readings"
Jan-26-07 09:53 AM by jack_of_trades

Ok, so when I log with my palm n' stein my TPS maxes out at 27%. Todd (vx100) checked it with his pocket logger with the same results. There is a full 5v going to the TPS too.I tested the TPS output wire at the sensor and I get a max of 3.75 volts using the harness ground and/or the chassis ground. The TPS input wire at the ECU reads the 3.75 volts as well. The readings on the S-AFC are 0 at idle and 100% at WOT and the sensor check also confirms a max of 3.75 volts.

Now, has anyone had this issue? I am just worried that the car will constantly stay in closed loop mode when I am WOT.

This is normal. The ECU *expects* ~3.6v at WOT.

Yeah, that I know but according to any datalogging the ECU 'internally' doesn't seem to be "seeing" more than 27% throttle position.

Because dataloggers are generic. The ECU doesn't send the logger a % throttle it sees, it sends it a value that the logger interprets as a percentage.

If you're right, explain why every logger shows less than 100% throttle on every 2GNT, and yet they still leave closed loop at WOT.

Have you considered its not the ECU but the datalogger. They are made for a wide variety of vehicles...
If the TPs is putting out ~3.7 and the ECU expects to see ~3.7 then...

Ok, I have already hooked up more than one logger with different software running on each palm (pocketlogger and palm n'stein) and both read exactly 27% max. I understand people max out generally between 70-100% on loggers but have you seen many that max out at 27%??? Just because the sensor is functioning and the "postive output" of the sensor reads 3.75 volts wouldn't necassarily mean the ecu is internally seeing the 3.75 volts. Perhaps the sensor ground circuit...I'll have to track that down tomorrow and see if I get the 3.75 volts directly at the sensor ground source and the TPS input on the ECU harness I suppose.

Now as far as I know, the logger just reads the TPS voltage (in my case the logger should be interpretting its value from a reading of 3.75 volts) and converts it to a percentage between a scale of 0 volts and 5 volts. With that logic, the reading that the logger is getting from the ECU via the OBDII port would be 1.35 volts, correct? If it was sseing the 3.75 volts wouldnt it convert it to roughly 75% then?? Also, is there any way to actually KNOW if the ecu is running in closed loop or open loop?

If you're concerned, test the voltage, and see dino's reply above.

if you want an accurate percentage, pay 3000.00+ to snap on or Matco for a scanner that has the program for your vehicle. The Snap on scanner reads to 100% but it cost me about 7500.00 what did your logging software cost?

You get what you pay for.

Ok, Ok. My co-worker actually owns the Snap-On Scanner so I'll have him schedule a time for me to hook up to it I suppose, just to be sure that internally the ECU is definitely seeing the 3+ volts from the sensor.

Now, my other question was how can you KNOW when the ECU is in closed loop or open loop operation indefinitely? Is there actually any way? The only indicator that I know people go by is a narrowband A/F gauge and watch whether it cycles or not. Anything else that could be done? Just curious.

I thought the loggers were supoposed to have an open-loop or closed loop indicator that queried the ECU status. Otherwise there is no way I am aware of other than fuel mixture.

Well, as far as I know the palm n'stein and pocketlogger software doesn't but perhaps another logging software may. If anyone knows of any software that does, give a shout.

The only way I can think of to even try to determine open loop/closed loop is if you could have an inline current indicator on the O2 wire at the ECU. Since it doesn't draw any signal from the O2 in open loop, there should be much less current draw at that time. A status LED could be hooked up to the current indicator (have to find one which measures in the proper mA range) and the LED can be installed in the cabin to indicate open loop.

I dunno, just rambling.

Pocketlogger maxes out at 76%

I had to search and make sure that was normal as well.

Yeah I've been searching on them too with all this perplexing me on it maxing at only 27%. The pocketlogger assumes 100% to be a full 5 volts but generally the 2GNT TPS sends a max of roughly 3.75 volts which in turn would be 75-76% on the pocketlogger. Its nearly the exact same with the palm n'stein. I dunno, I'll figure it out.

Figure out if its simply the datalogger thats reading incredibly low percentages or if the ECU actually thinks thats all that the TPS is doing. I know the odds are good its the logger so I will just double check it with the snap-on scanner this week.
