#102321, "performance help!"

Im trying to figure out how to get me car (1999 eclipse gs) to get to at least maybe 180 190, 200 whp but without getting a turbo (b/c i cant afford it at the moment) or nitrous. What should i get? and about how much would that be?...ive heard of "Free mods" but i dont know what that is lol and dont know if that even has to do with modding your car, or is this just not possible??

Thanks for the help

First off welcome to the board. Second, the search function is your friend, there is a ton of information on this site. Third, it's not gonna happen if you can't afford a turbo. It costs much more on our cars to get that kind of horsepower without turbocharging than it does with. You can have every bolt on you can think of and a built bottom end with high compression pistons and you're not gonna be where you want. Currently the highest documented hp out of these engines without a turbo or nitrous is buy bullettdsm on this site at just a hair under 170whp. This type of dedication will cost thousands, and twice that if you're not gonna do the labor.

You can piece together a turbo kit for your car for <$1500 and will have the power you want. However, if you can just barely afford that I would save my money. Once you have that much power on these engines, you are eventually going to break something and have to rebuild your motor. It might be a few years down the road, but it can also be a few days.

Also, free mods are for the turbo dsms, not us, unless if you call weight reduction a free mod.

Check back in a minute and I'll post a few links for you to start reading

Oh damn, sounds like you need to search a bit. Welcome to 2gnt. Going all motor is not a bad thing to do, you just have to be dedicated.

There are really no free mods for the 2gnt. Do the basic breather mods (i.e. intake, header, exhaust) before anything, and then read, read, read. Take a look at my mod list on my profile that is linked in my sig, that is *almost* everything you will need to get above 150 whp, minus the low comp pistons I have. I built for a turbo. Check out DR1665's list or search for bullettdsm's mod list, think about how much money is there, and rethink what you want to do.

I think you are getting ahead of yourself a bit.

EDIT: Damnit Corey, beat me to it emoji

Cool beans man, just search around for the basic breather mods, and that will give you a place to start.

Good luck, and here's another piece of advise. Decide what your long term goals are (if you have any, idk maybe you're planning on selling the thing in a year) and it will save you money down the line. If you think you'd eventually like to turbocharge, start with maybe a catback, stay away from a header b/c it will just get replaced (the exhaust might eventually too, but plenty of people run 2.5" piping for turbo applications) and if you want an intake don't go out and drop $200+ for aem when you can spend <$100 on ebay piping and a good filter.

BTW you have discovered a great tool, you can read for hours on end and it just gets you excited about modding your car, but this site also has its downfalls, it will make your car a money pit. Within a few short months of discovering this site, I bought a kit used off of a local member and have been dropping money left and right since. Of course it also turned me towards the right path away from body kits and lighting and to performance which by far makes the car the most exciting and fun.

Hey welcome to the site, again. Just thought I would post up a mod list of what it takes to derive some power NA:

Inside:
JE 10.5
Crower 2 cams
Stainless valves
.020 off head
5 angle valve job
Personal port and polish (intake and exhaust)
MLS Head gasket
Of course, full rebuild on bearing etc. (stock)
Full float wrist pins

Outside:
AF/X pulley
AF/X ECU
Jeep 60 mm TB
Personal port and polish intake
1 adj. cam gear on intake side
E-bay Ram air intake
Catch can
E-bay 4-1 header (cleaned up with grinder)
"hi-flow cat"
2.5 exhaust
No power steering /AC
Honda "race" radiator - rice a roni
Integra battery - rice a roni
Summit heat wrap

Suspension;
tiens and adj KYB's (1.8 drop) in front
stock springs adj KYB in back

ERT LSD
Spec stage 2 NON modular clutch - Yuk

Believe it or not (minus the LSD and clutch), I got all these parts for less than $2500 (I added it up somewhere on dsmtuners). Now, all the work was done by me and I found used deals on some parts. BUT, I would love to have you get the NA feeling! (my set-up beats the stocker turbos FWD and AWD on the track) The biggest problem that you are going to run into is the tuning. The 97 allows for an "race" ECU. But it is only for the 97. You would have to go with another kind of tuner. MSnS seems to be the choice for most our members cars.

As stated earlier, spend a bunch of time searching. It will answer many questions and educate you about the choices of our engines.

MB

And sorry guys (Corey/Jason) not me emoji

Good advice in this thread. emoji

Get a goal before you get into things too deep. Otherwise, it can get expensive. Mark put together the fastest all motor 2GNT in the history of this site for around $2000, but he's got a lot of his personal time and experience into his project. Personally, I'm closer to $5000 into my project and, because I'm a lazy bastard, I've not made any dyno pulls or track attacks to test it. emoji

The best bang for your buck would be to pick up a 2.5" cat back exhaust (GST rear section will work too), a UDP, and a universal K&N filter you can bolt to the end of your intake pipe. None of that would have to be replaced if you went turbo.

Just give it some thought.
