#101626, "Please help!!!!!!!!!!, problem after rebuild and cant figure it out...."

Ok, I just rebuilt my motor, the only internal upgrades are 10:5 pistons and eagle rods, the head was off of my old motor which worked perfectly fine. I have the timing set to factory tdc right now and it wont start. Over the past week I have tried moving intake up two and exhaust back to and everything in between. I called a performance shop they said to try cold spark plugs, I did that, another said to use hot and i did, with stock plugs they are getting covered in gas, along with the cold ones, but with both it would start and ilde occasionally for a split second, then unless I gave it gas it died and you could smell gas in the exhaust. It ran the best with the hot plugs but still crappy. I think its a timing issue but Im not sure, what would your opinion on the problem and what plugs to use be?

I have checked all sensors, vac lines seem to be fine, no seeing a cel for the time its on, it always cranks but barely ever wants to start

Please help Im desperate!!!!!

Sounds like you either dont have compression or your timing could be 180 out. If you have stock cams, align the crank back at TDC, pull your valve cover off and are the holes in the cams both pointing upwards? Check compression too.

Well I found out that the battery was to low so now it will start but it goes to normal idle and raises to about 2000, there is still a strong smell of gas in the exhaust and a little smoke coming out of it.

The cams are set to tdc, I verified the holes, and I have no clue of how to chack compression, let alone dont have the tools.

Hmmm, a high idle like that makes me think you have a vacuum leak, how did you check for leaks? And a compression check is fairly simple. If you can change spark plugs you can do a compression check. Do a search and you will find out how.

Check all the vac lines on the back on the intake manifold as well as making sure all the snsors are properly plugged in and functioning. Are there any CEL's?

That rich smell reminds me of my problem, when it was traced back to the timing being 1/2 tooth off on the Exhaust side. There was no CEL indicating the timing has skipped, only a bank 1 rich condition.

start with the easy stuff first...ie Vaccum leaks and work your way. I would still double check your timing. Even sometimes it takes the season pros a few tries to get it right.

Use standard heat range plugs. With all the messing with timing is possible she just flooded out, and that's the smoke. Check all your vacuum lines for the idle, also could be the IAC stickings. Like stated, check the simple stuff first before you assume a major problem.

Did you install any other mods during the rebuild?

Go that way, really fast, if something gets in your way... turn. I was too lazy to do it myself.

I found out the starting problem was a bent valve and got the head machined. Now it starts and runs kinda smooth. I still have the idle around 2000, and if you regulate the idle control valve hole it goes to normal idle. I replaced the Idle control valve and still the same problem. I also used carb cleaner on the hoses and intake to check for leak and nothing. ANy other ideas?
