#101353, "Help ! Does your ECU sing to you ?"

1995 Non Turbo, manual trans....

Been having an intermittent no "check engine" light at all with key in "on" position, no codes, and car will crank but not start. Although the ECU tested OK, (they could not find the intermittent problem)I had my ECU rebuilt by Micro-Tech Http://www.micro-tech-auto.com/company_info.html

I am still having intermittent stall/no start . I have checked power and grounds to the ECU, all OK. Consensus is that it is still a bad ECU. If I wait minutes to hours the check engine light comes back on and car starts and runs fine.

Now the weird part... At first I thought I was going nuts, hearing things.... with key in "on" position (engine not running), check engine light coming on I thought I heard a faint pulsating high pitched tone, like Morse Code ! Put my ear close to the ECU indeed the ECU was singing to me ! It sounds like the pitch was changing in harmony to the flash "12" (power to the ECU has been disconnected within last 50 cycles) and flash "55" ( end codes) flash codes ! When the codes stop, I get a wavering high pitch tone.

QUESTION : Any one care to indulge me;, please "listen" you your ECU with engine not running, key "on". Does it sing to you, or is mine squealing that it is sick and dying !!!???? Any response greatly appreciated....Steve

I have a 97 MTX and have always heard a faint whine of sorts right after shutting the car off. From what I have seen over the years, this is normal, but not what you are describing.

Where are you located? If you're close to one of the major 2GNT hubs, you might be lucky enough to have another 95 2GNT owner close enough to you that he might let you swap out your ECU for a couple minutes to test the ECU theory.

a normal ECU can make sounds. the presence of sounds coming from yours does not rule out or in a faulty ECU.

Now I am finding that when it does not squeal, the "check engine light"
is not coming on, car won't start. One moderately sharp blow with a wrench ( I got the idea on this board, topic #79787 ), and its starts squealing, light comes back on, car runs. I wonder if dropping it from a three story building would permanantly fix the problem !? The Hammer ... works every time !

P.S. Double checked the connector pins, whatever I could get to , must be inside the ECU !?....
