#101309, "JE Ring End Gap info needed"

Ok so I got my block back from the machine shop. Im about to get my measurement for the bore and my damn t-gauge breaks. I can not get a replacement for 2 weeks due to nobody buys that stuff off the tool truck anymore. although he did a ring filer that i bought laying around oh well.

JE Pistons-im useing .0045 piston to wall clearance
JE Rings-

Now getting to my question would it be safe/stupid(most likely is) to use the stock bore of 3.44 + .020 overbore to plug in to the ring end gap table here http://www.jepistons.com/dept/tech/dl/piston_instrc2618.pdf to get my end gaps. Would I need to add any thing like my piston to wall clearance to get my actual bore/geustimated bore.

Or what do the rest of you guys run for end gaps for a turbo motor

If I have to wait 2 weeks I can but I would to finish the build

Thanks,
Dirk

Stock bore = 3.445"
If you went + 0.020", then your bore should be 3.465". With that formula, ring gap should be about 0.017".

I check all 4 top rings to see if they're the same. I'd shoot for the 0.017" +/- 0.002" (0.001", or exact, if you wanna get picky).

However, if you find one ring that's say 0.019" out of the box (which I doubt), I'd file them all to match that one and be done with it.

It's should be asy to get your gaps close to one another, as long as you take your time. The one recommendation I have is to pay close attention that you are grinding the gap even so when the ring closes up you don't have a triagle shaped gap.

If I calculated out a ring gap of .017" and pulled a set out of the box with a ring gap of .019" I wouldn't use those rings. I' get another set.

Heh. I didn't do anything with mine, either. Like I said, I looked at them and they didn't look "too wide," so I went ahead and installed them. I got a bit of blow by, but by the time I noticed smoke at WOT getting on a highway in SoCal on my way to Turb's place two years ago and got back home to run a compression test, a wrist pin lock had failed and I lost a piston. The rest is history.

Well I need to order another set due to all 4 top rings had a end gap of .020-.022. Need to say I'am a little upset.

I think im gonna order .040 set of rings so that I can file them down to where I need em. Think that is a good idea? any other ring that i might look into?

Thanks,
Dirk

No.

Factory spec end gap for the top ring is ~.020" anyway.

lol yeah a wrist pin lock failed, that must have been it.....lol Nevermind the lack of gap caused the rings to expand and sieze in the cylinder making the crank yank downwards on the piston cracking the bottom side of the wrist pin bore.....

He actually lost a wrist pin lock, which caused the pin to slide to one side and destroy his cylinder bore.

Not defending his gongshow ring gap idea, just saying.

Read my post. I measured all the gaps and they were within spec without having to file them.

No, no Mike. I read your post. You just got bunched up with the rest. Not hatin' on anybody. I hope I was just laughing along with (as opposed to at) those that did it. We've all done goofy things and I give those guys credit for actually acknowledging that they did it.

It's just that you can get away with being a little out of spec on bearing, journals etc. You can even get away with a very slightly warped deck. But that chamber is SO important. Tight rings and you're dead in the water reasonably soon. Too loose rings and you might as well have not done the work.

That's why I found it funny.

Haha. No offense taken. I know I fucked up. I'm thinking the lock failed on me (never did find it in the pan) and that was the death nell of that bottom end, but it's academic at this point. I got about 14k on that bottom end before it shit the bed. I'm well beyond 30k on the one that followed with no complaints.
