When you say the bottom half of the block I assume you mean the bedplate. It can be a pain to get off, especially if you've never done it before, knock it on the sides a couple times with a rubber mallet and see if it loosens it up. Break-away tabs, I have no idea. By the way there is a space between a little overhand of the bedplate and block thats a good pry point.

If the rubber mallet won't break it free, start tapping all around the sides of the bedplate with a little 3 lb sledge hammer. The sharp impact of the hammer will crack the brittle dried sealant. As long as you don't hit the oil pan sealing surface directly, you can hit it pretty hard. Eventually, it should break free. Remember that there are two alignment pins keeping the bedplate aligned with the block.

There's some tabs on the bedplate that stick out that bolts go into. It's almost like they were ment to be hit on for the bedplate seperation. Like corbin said there are alignment pins so try to hit down on those tabs, so you arn't hitting against the pins. Have you hits alternate sides.
...should be easy.
