I have pulled a code 0401(insufficient egr flow) and now my car is started to run poorly in traffic. I live in South Carolina so I don't have any emmisions or checks. Should I remove the egr or leave it on and fix it? I know I will have a cel but I just want my car to run decent. I am only asking because I have had numerous people saying don't do it because it helps keep combustions temps down, gas mileage, and because it helps prevent pre ignition. What would you do 2gnt?

It was too much of a pain for me so I just took it off. It's really up to you, do you mind having a CEL on? If it was working properly then I would say leave it, but if you've got to go in and fix stuff, I just don't know if it's worth the hassle.

I would keep it on, it could gvie you an exhaust leak ioutside and inside. Plus, 5-0 could pull you over for having an bad leak. I'm not if it, could happened?
I too, live in an area where there's no emission tests done
Emission tests are done only when someone, buys a car that has a Salvage title. Example my brothers Mazda-Slow mx-6, He paid alot to have it done in stark county. haha
Anyway, just keep your EGR I haven't had problems with mine.

Id replace the EGR valve (might as well do the solenoid too while your at it)
Reason why? While you might not have emission testing now..you will soon and you will have to fix it anyways to get the CEL off to pass emissions. I did the same thing, and removed mine about 2 years ago (I live in NC which for my county back then didnt have emission testing) sure enough the next year we did and I had to fix it to pass.

its $300 for the egr solenoid here in SD, but ill just yank mine from Destruckts old RS. CEL? watcha talking about willis? i removed the bulb when i put my red LEDs in the gauge cluster

Removed mine, blocked it off, and left the lines that reads it and I don't have a cel

well it has been seen before when some one removes it and there is NO CELs, its just luck i think, this whole egr thing has been discussed SOOO much here, but at the end we come to the conclusion that it does not make a "Performance" difference. there is the resistor trick and many others, but its all up to you, do what u feel comfortable with in your car and is legal, and ofcourse if $$ is a factor consider that too.

Thanks everyone for the posts. I think that I am going to just block it off for now and hold on to the equipment. I don't know if it is the valve, I applied vaccume to it and it cut the engine off. If the valve wasn't working then it wouldn't have cut the engine off right? I think that it is the actual sensor that is messed up. I just started as a tech. working from 7 to 5 then going to school from 6 to 10 and 8 to 4 on sat. Now the only problem is going to be finding time to block it off. I barely had time today to do a compression test outside of school. I got 173 174 180 180 incase any body was intrested, sound good. Oh well, more money is coming in so I will be able to finish my stage two SOON. Just sucks because I have to work this weekend and won't be able to go to NOPI Nat's.

Since your getting the Insufficient flow code i will explain that one.
First take a long screw driver and manually open the EGR. You will see slots in the diaphram area between the bolt flang and the Vac line. Gently pry the diaphram to the drivers side. this will open the EGR. If the Idle drops then the EGR tube is clear.
Next take a vacuum tester and connect it to the EGR and pump it. the EGR should open and the vac gauge should not drop but hold vacuum. If the gauge does not hold vacuum or the EGR does not open then the EGR is bad.
The solinoid will throw its own code so dont replace that unless the EGR valve tests fine.
A vac tester can be rented at vatozone or purchased, they arent expensive.
I drove it to work and school today and I haven't got a code yet. I know that it will probably be back but I thought I would post my moment of joy. I live it the upstate area of SC, Greenville/Spartanburg. If you have any more questions about my location then pm me.
