Just got done installing the neon trans, and the car wouldn't start. Turn the key and got nothing at all. Battery is fine because it doesn't dim at all and the system will bump nice and loud while the digital capacitor still reads over 12v. That immediately makes me think starter. I used a screwdriver and attempted jumping the starter...eventually the car actually fired up. It idled, but sounded like some kind of clanking/grinding/nastiness most likely from the transmission. I've read about the starter hitting clutch bolts etc...but I'm just not sure.
EDIT: Ok, took the starter out and inspected it, checked out pretty good. Jumped it while not installed, did it's job. Manually turned the flywheel then the crank pulley...didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. Reinstalled starter, turning key still did nothing. Jumped the starter again and she cranked up just fine. No more weird noises or grinding...just a nasty exhaust leak. Suspect that the starter may have just not engaged/disengaged fully for some reason. Thinking the no start with key possibly from a bad signal feed to the starter...definitely something in the harness I would say.

Ooh, took her out for a drive after jumping the starter. New neon tranny shifts like butter, not grinding or difficulty at all even going into reverse. Boost felt good, then bam no power all of a sudden when hit full boost, kinda felt like a fuel cut but not really since I have a 95. Took her back home cuz I was smelling gas...sure enough for the first time ever, I managed to blow a line off the fmu. Damn I need a late style fuel rail so I can finally install my megasquirt.
I'm done tinkering for tonight, gotta let the gallons of gas everywhere dry up. I guess the first thing to check tomorrow will be the actual signal wire that goes to the starter.

Yeah, I'm really hoping it's just that wire. I'll remove the loom etc today to check it out, hopefully a little soldering and she cranks right up with the key again
