#100041, "Engine out of car = no fuel pump prime??"

Can I prime the fuel pump with nothing hooked up? I can't figure out why it won't prime. The new engine is in the car but none of the harness is connected. Before you say anything the ASD and Fuel pump relays are plugged in and working. I am getting a short burst of 12V back at the pump but it wont prime the system.

The reason I need to do this is when I re-plumbed my car with the 3/8" lines I ran them together and the labels got ripped off the ends in the engine bay, now I can't tell which one is feed and which is return.

Recap:
I need to get fuel to flow
Nothing is hooked to block or sensors
12V at pump for a second but it wont shoot fuel...

Suggestions welcome.

I hear you on the ASD/fuel relays being connected, but doesn't the ECU trip the ASD when it can't find a crank reference (i.e., the on position)? Either way, can't hurt to connect CAS/CMP and give it a shot, right? Then again, without having the harness connected, the ECU isn't seeing a MAP signal, either...

emoji Just throwing a couple ideas out there.

Ground the white wire / red stripe with the car on. Should kick the pump on...
